INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

This paper consists of two sections, A and B. It has six examination


items. Section A has two compulsory items. Section B has two parts, I
and II. Respond to one item from each part. Answer four items in all.
Answers to Section A must be written in the spaces provided while those
of Section B must be written on the answer booklet(s) provided. Any
additional item(s) answered will not be scored.

Joram is a hardworking boy who lives with his mother in
Kyebando.One day, Joram decided to climb their jackfruit tree
for a fruit that he could eat after spending all the day without
eating. Accidentally, he fell down and due to the severe injuries
he got, his mother decided to rush him to NPC medical clinic for
quick medical attention. While there, the nurse gave them
Tylenol and Motrin tablets which he was instructed to swallow
for a week if he wanted to get relieved from the excessive pain.
Upon proper following of the instructions from the nurse for a
full week, Joram got healed. This left him amazed and he has
approached you for further information about the drugs he was
given.

Item 2
An investor has established an industry that manufactures shirts
from cotton as the main raw material with in Kasese. In a letter
that was written to the procurement department by a group of
residents, it was pointed out that the shirts manufactured by this
industry are easily spoilt by cockroaches and rats. The
information reached the investor and he has heard that Nylon
could be a suitable alternative. He has decided to send the
Procurement Officer to make thorough research and find out the
nature of the material, what it is composed of and its impact on
the environment.

Item 3
Air around Namanve Industrial area in Mukono District has
been greatly polluted. This has been as a result of the increasing
number of industries getting established with in the area. This
has attracted attention from the government of Uganda.
As a trigger, the government through the National Environment
Management Authority (NEMA) is planning to create awareness
to the residents of the area through the meetings organized in the
area and you have been selected by the District Environment
Officer.
Task
As a chemistry literate, prepare a short deliverable message that
you will deliver during the meeting.
Item 4
Fresh water bodies and rocks in Hoima have been tremendously
destroyed due to increased levels of urbanization and oil
processing. This has left the government with no option apart
from organizing public campaigns to sensitize the residents
about the ongoing projects.

The theme for the public campaigns is ‘‘PROTECT A
NATURAL RESOURCE TO SAVE A LIFE.’’
The District Committee that was appointed by the government
to conduct the public campaigns has selected you to give a

the rapid population growth, their exploitation is causing
proportional environmental degradation. The government
through media houses wants to make public awareness on the
matter. Your school has been chosen to lead the environmental

knowledge on natural resources.
