(Attempt all items in this section)
Item 1.
The local market in Kumi town has seen a significant increase in the use of single-use plastic bags and
containers. This has led to a growing problem of plastic waste accumulating in the streets, drainage
systems, and surrounding environment. The community is concerned about the negative impact on
sanitation, local wildlife, and the overall aesthetic of the area. Several community members have
suggested banning single-use plastics, but others worry about the impact on small businesses that rely on
these materials.

Task;

SECTION B
Part II
Answer one item from this part on the answer sheets provided.

Item 2.
In Eastern Uganda, aquaculture (fish farming) is a growing industry. Many fish farms rely on
supplemental oxygen to maintain optimal conditions in their ponds and tanks, often using energy-
intensive methods. There is interest in exploring more sustainable and cost-effective ways to produce
oxygen on-site, with a focus on minimizing environmental impact.

Task;
As a student of chemistry, educate the local aquaculture cooperative on alternative methods for on-site
oxygen production and its associated environmental costs. (10 scores)
Part II
Answer one item from this part on the answer sheets provided.
Item 3.
The degradation of natural resources in Uganda is a significant challenge that requires sustainable
management practices and conservation efforts to ensure the long-term health and viability of the
country's ecosystems.

The officials from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) are planning to sensitize the
people countrywide about sustainability of natural resources through a national wide television
broadcast. You have been invited by one of the officials from NEMA to have your say on this matter.

Task;
Prepare a presentation you will deliver on the national wide television broadcast. (10 scores)

Item 4.
A rapidly growing industrial area near your town relies heavily on coal-fired power plants and older,
less efficient factories. Residents have noticed a significant increase in respiratory problems, especially
among children and the elderly. The local health clinic is reporting a surge in asthma cases and other
lung-related illnesses. This has prompted the officials to create awareness to people on community
meeting under the theme "CLEAN AIR: A BREATHING RIGHT," .

Task;
As a chemistry learner, prepare a presentation for a community meeting. (10 scores)
