4.7.4 Endurance
When a trolley is tested in accordance with 5.4.2.3, there shall be no sign of deformation or failure
that could result in the loss of the load.
4.8.1 Trolleys shall incorporate features that avoid any derailment or accidental fall in the event of
wheel failure.
4.8.2 Trolleys shall be designed in such a way that they can be fitted to the beam in a manner that
prevents adjustment during operation.

If required, buffers manufactured from rubber or synthetic materials may be fitted to the trolleys (see
annex A).
4.14.1 General
All operating chains for trolleys shall be of such length at operating levels to prevent them from
becoming entangled with other equipment or from dragging on the ground.
NOTE A gap of at least 0,5 m to 1,0 m is recommended between the lower part of the chain loop and the level on
which the operator stands.

Chain wheels shall be designed to be compatible with, and to ensure effective operation of, the
chain. Means shall be provided to guide the chain into the pockets of the chain wheel and to ensure
its retention.
5.2 Inspection
Carry out a visual inspection, in accordance with the checking procedure specified by the
manufacturer to verify that all the machine elements are operating normally, and to ensure that the
equipment meets the safety requirements in clause 4 of this standard.
Verification that is carried out on one or several representative samples of a product before its initial
mass production.
Verification that is carried out on a component that is subjected to the load (e.g. chains, ropes,
hooks) in order to verify its factor of safety.
Machines manufactured as single units, structures, supports and mass-produced equipment having
a working load limit greater than 5 ton shall be verified only by calculation.

5.4 Testing
5.4.1 General
Subject trolleys that are mass-produced and have a working load limit of up to 5 ton to the tests
given in 5.4.2 and 5.4.3.
When hoist-and-trolley combinations are tested, the hoist shall be removed and the trolley fitted with
a load suspension bar for testing purposes.
a) Load the representative sample trolley with the working load limit (WLL) and hold for 2 min.
Check for any distortion or failure.
b) Load the representative sample trolley with the 2 × WLL and h old for 2 m in. Check for any
permanent distortion or failure.
c) Load the representative sample trolley with the 3 × WLL and hold for 2 min. Check for and record
the mode and degree of distortion.
d) Load the representative sample trolley with the 4 × WLL and hold for 2 min. Check for and record
the mode and degree of distortion or failure.
e) Gradually increase the load and r ecord the load at which failure occurs. The actual factor of
safety is calculated by dividing the actual breaking load by the rated working load limit.
Remove the wheels from the trolley and place the unit on the beam.
When the wheels are removed, the trolley shall not rest on the axles.
5.4.2.3.1 Apparatus
a) complies with the requirements for a grade 1,0 machine of SANS 7500-1;

c) has been calibrated not more than six months before the test; and
d) for which a certificate covering the most recent calibration is available for inspection.
5.4.2.3.2 Procedure
Fit the suspension bar of the trolley into the grips of the tensile testing machine and apply a rapid
pulsating load to the trolley.
Start each cycle of the load at 100 kg, increase to 150 % of the working load limit (WLL) of the
trolley and decrease to 100 kg.
There shall be no sign of deformation or failure that could result in loss of the load.
From each batch manufactured (or as agreed with the purchaser) subject one sample to destructive
testing as given in 5.4.2.1. The factor of safety shall be at least 4.
Subject each unit to a static load of 150 % of the WLL for 2 min.
There shall be no sign of deformation or failure that could result in loss of the load.
b) the table of loads as a function of the machine configurations and support conditions;
d) advice regarding the annual inspection of all lifting equipment in accordance with the government
regulations.
