Distance and Angle Measurements
Distance and Angle Measurements
Objectives:
1. To obtain the horizontal angles in a working planar surface
2. To obtain the vertical angles in pointing of surrounding building and other structures.
2. Point S is in front of the Grandstand area of FEU Main Campus. Select a comfortable area
and this is where your transit instrument or theodolite is positioned.
3. Point 1 is on one corner of the volleyball court. Point 2 is another corner in the
flagpole area. Point 3 and 4 are corners of the basketball court.
4. From Point S, spot and view the marked rod positioned at Point 1. Then, from this position,
slide the transit or theodolite to view Point 2. Record the corresponding angle subtended
by this transit movement. Do the same towards another point at 3 and 4.
5. Fill-out the table below for the horizontal angle being measured. The angle in between two
lines is just the difference of their directions. Use the azimuth or bearing to present the
directions as a standard.

2. Point S is anywhere in between the basketball and volleyball court areas. Select a
comfortable area and this is where your transit instrument or theodolite is
positioned.
3. Point 1 is on one corner of the building approximately shown in Figure 2. This point is an
edge corner of the roof of that building. From the transit position, subtend a vertical
angle upwards to seek over this Point 1. Record the vertical angle.
4. From Point 1, revolve back at horizontal position forward to point 2. Point 2 is the tip of
the flagpole. Similarly, subtend a vertical angle upwards to seek over this Point 2. Record
the vertical angle.
5. Finally from Point 2, revolve back at horizontal position but now forwarded to point 3. Point
3 is the tip of any of the spires in the Grandstand area. Perhaps, choose the outermost
spire. Similarly, subtend a vertical angle upwards to seek over this Point 3. Record the
vertical angle.
6. Fill-out the table below for the vertical angle being measured. Repeat the process for each
point using the measurement trial of another group member.
