Feminist Theory, Hermeneutical Phenomenology, & Human Environment System Begin !!
Week 11-15
Humans, as a complex being, cannot be studied by mere sciences or arts alone. Social sciences develop different ideas and
methods to explain and interpret various phenomena experienced by humans. In this module, we will study one of the
major social sciences ideas namely, the Feminist Theory, Hermeneutical Phenomenology, and Human Environment
System. We will uncover how these ideas, contributed in the interpretation in various phenomena. As a Senior High
School student and future advocate of change, it is advantageous that you possess relevant knowledge to understand social
phenomena and discern among alternatives.
YOUR TARGETS !!
The struggle for equality for both sexes existed since time immemorial.
Every nation has difficulties in terms of defining the structural problems that
affect the view on how women should be treated. As society progresses,
women’s movement responded to the needs of the time. People incorrectly
believed that feminism is all about the pursuit of women’s rights and their
superiority over women. The goal of feminism is the equality of all sexes.
Feminism as a social theory
It must be clearly understood that as a social theory, there is a shift of
perspective. With the introduction of feminism, policies and perspective
become inclusive as females become now a social actor. It does not merely
focus on marginalized women but rather equality in terms of interaction. In
the past, due to misrepresentation, women were classified under the
marginalized and most vulnerable group. However, because of the rigorous
struggle for equality, women can already find their way to be represented in
the bureaucracy and acknowledge women’s role and contribution to nation-
building.
Gender equality, the mantra of Feminism
Gender equality, being a fundamental human right, is necessary to achieve
peace in all aspects of life. It is believed that gender equality does not depict any social or political differences in terms of
significance. According to the Philippine Commission on Women, Philippines drops 8 places in gender equality, remains
top in Asia. “The Philippines remains the top country in Asia in terms of closing the gender gap” as per Global Gender
Gap Report 2020 of the World Economic Forum.
Hermeneutical Phenomenology
Hermeneutical Phenomenology Believes in the acceptance of multiple interpretations of a phenomenon and is focused on
the subjective experiences of individuals and groups.
Hermeneutical Phenomenology Hermeneutics is the theory and methodology of interpretation, especially the
interpretation of biblical texts, wisdom literature, and philosophical texts. Hermeneutics is more than interpretive
principles or methods used when immediate comprehension fails and includes the art of understanding and
communication. Phenomenology, meanwhile, is the philosophical study of the structures of experience and consciousness.
Hermeneutical Phenomenology As a philosophical movement, it was founded in the early years of the 20th century by
Edmund Husserl and was later expanded upon by a circle of his followers at the universities of Göttingen and Munich in
Germany. It then spread to France, the United States, and elsewhere, often in contexts far removed from Husserl's early
work. Husserl's conception of phenomenology has been criticized and developed not only by himself but also by students
such as Edith Stein and Roman Ingarden, by hermeneutic philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, by existentialists such
as Nicolai Hartmann, Gabriel Marcel, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Jean-Paul Sartre, by other philosophers such as Max
Scheler, Paul Ricoeur, Jean-Luc Marion, Michel Henry, Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida, and by sociologists such as
Alfred Schütz and Eric Voegelin.
Human Environment System The human system is characterized by numerous structures and institutions that are
responsible for guiding the behavior and attitudes of the people towards certain issues in society. Environment system
includes all ecosystem that is being pressured by continuous and increasing human activities. Both human and
environment systems affect each other in such a manner that they coexist and need one another for coevolution.
Human Environment System Roland Werner Scholz a German mathematician, psychologist, and Professor Emeritus of
Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich.
