—Captain America[source]
Doom's sitting as the new Sorcerer Supreme. Mutantkind's rebuilding...and we got countless new vampires, some just innocent folks trying to get by. Impromptu Avengers just managed to save us from life under vampiric rule...the Avengers Emergency Response Squad's going to be there for whatever's next.
History
Inspired by the impromptu Avengers team he formed with Hercules, Kate Bishop, Quicksilver, and Hazmat during the Blood Hunt,[6] Captain America formed the Avengers Emergency Response Squad to swiftly deal with the increasing crises that had been emerging around the world and handpicked a new lineup for his new team.[1]
Serpent's Tears[]
When Sin acquired Erida's death mask and began using her new powers to terrorize Germany, Cap immediately left with the first members to arrive (Wasp, Photon, and Shang-Chi) to deal with her while Jarvis waited at Avengers Mansion to greet the remaining members. While Cap and his deployed team fought Sin, a tardy Clint Barton passed the time by playing poker and catching up with the team's later arrivals (Lightning, She-Hulk, Lightspeed, Hercules, and Wonder Man). By the time Sin had been defeated, Night Thrasher was the final member to arrive and provided the team with upgraded tech and gear, which included specialized Avengers Jackets.[1]
For their next mission, Cap, Hawkeye, Night Thrasher and Hercules were deployed to Kingsport to deal with a legion of ghostly apes periodically attacking the town. After discovering that the apes were the angry ghosts of the Red Ghost's deceased Super-Apes, who had been trying to kill their former master in Kingsport, the AVENG.E.R.S. ended the threat by allowing the ghosts to attack Red Ghost but keeping him alive to stand trial, which allowed them to pass on to the afterlife.[5]
While She-Hulk, Lightspeed, Lightning and Wonder Man were saving innocent vampires from the Nightstalkers at North Brother Island, Shang-Chi investigated a theft at museum that had been committed during the team's fight with Sin in Germany. Shang-Chi was ambushed by Tiger Snake, who had been anticipating Shang-Chi's arrival. The two fought to a standstill until Shang-Chi was forced to retreat after Tiger Snake poisoned him. After recovering at the Mansion, Shang-Chi met with Captain America after his team returned from Kingsport and recounted his fight with Tiger Snake, causing both to realize that the crises the AVENG.E.R.S. had been dealing with were a cover up for an even bigger threat.[7]
Captain America discovered that the Serpent Society had been committing robberies near every single crisis the AVENG.E.R.S. dealt with. After receiving reports of Victorious' assault on Latveria and the Serpent Society committing a heist at an abandoned mine in Attania, the AVENG.E.R.S split into two teams, with Photon leading Lightning, Wonder Man, She-Hulk and Hercules against Victorious and Cap taking Shang-Chi, Night Thrasher, Lightspeed, Hawkeye and Wasp to deal with the Serpents. While Photon's team managed to talk Victorious down, Cap's team subdued Tiger Snake and the other Serpents. However, Tiger Snake kept the Squad distracted long enough for Titanoboa to get the drop in on them and Pit Viper to gather the final components for the Serpent's Tears. Pit Viper attempted to subject Shang-Chi to the Tears but Captain America jumped in the way--which Pit Viper expected him to do--and was transformed into a snake-like monster.[8] The remaining AVENG.E.R.S. arrived and rallied together to stop the Serpent Society. Night Thrasher and Hawkeye led the assault while providing cover and additional weaponry and equipment; Shang-Chi, She-Hulk and Lightspeed each defeated Tiger Snake, Titanoboa and Pit Viper, respectively; Lightning and Hercules routed the remaining Serpents; Wonder Man destroyed the supply of Serpent's Tears and Wasp and Photon immobilized Cap-Snake. After the Serpents were sent to the Hague, Cap was taken back to the Avengers Mansion where he was reverted back to normal.[9]
The Monolith[]
After apprehending Crossbones, Daredevil was recruited by Captain America into the AVENG.E.R.S.. A charity soccer game between the main Avengers team and the Emergency Response Squad was interrupted when a gigantic crimson Monolith suddenly appeared in Staten Island, which attracted the attention of Tyrannus and his army of Tyrannoids.[10] Both Avengers teams arrived to stop Tyrannus and his army as his invasion to claim the Monolith was harming nearby civilians. Most of the Avengers were preoccupied with evacuating civilians while Tyrannus used his powers to immobilize Wonder and Shang-Chi and controlled several bystanders to act as human shields to protect him from Photon and Captain America. However when Tyrannus reached the Monolith, it pulled him inside its dimension.[11] Without Tyrannus controlling them, the Tyrannoids went berserk and attacked everything in sight. Realizing that Tyrannus was needed to pacify the Tyrannoids, Wonder Man traveled inside the Monolith to retrieve Tyrannus, who had been reduced to an emaciated corpse by the Monolith's energies.[12] Wonder Man returned with Tyrannus's body, which was then revived by Photon. Out of gratitude for being resurrected, Tyrannus then brought the Tyrnnoids heel with his powers and ended his invasion. As his resurrection and pacification his army left him heavily weakened, Tyrranus did not resist arrest but was able to get himself released by claiming diplomatic immunity as the ruler of Subterranea.[13]
Deep Freeze[]
When Diabol hijacked a Russian cruise ship before it docked at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and demanded to face the Avengers, Shang-Chi, Wasp, Photon and Daredevil were sent to investigate.[14] Diabol used his magic to summon the AVENG.E.R.S. within a dark winter forest that he created within the ship and sent crew members under his possession to attack them, but the AVENG.E.R.S. freed them from his control. Diabol revealed himself to the AVENG.E.R.S. and turned Wasp into one of his demonic servants.[15] Daredevil freed Wasp from Diabol's control by destroying his presence within Wasp's mind in the Astral Plane while Shang-Chi and Photon combined their powers to disintegrate Diabol, which also freed themselves and the captured crew from his dimension.[16]
Incineration[]
While the AVENG.E.R.S. were enjoying their off day, Shang-Chi and Night Thrasher returned to Staten Island to analyze the Monolith and discovered that it was absorbing cosmic energy and while it resisted most forms of technology and magic, it was psychokinetic in nature. Captain America and the Human Torch met up in Cooperstown for a game of baseball, but were attacked by the Promethean Front and Basil Frankenstein III, who misblamed the two Invaders for the death of his grandfather. Hawkeye, Hercules and Lightning arrived to back up Cap and the Torch.[17] After the Torch and Lightning defeated the Prometheans, Hercules slew the Terrortoma and Cap and Hawkeye incapacitated Frankenstein, the mad doctor refused to surrender attempted to kill the AVENG.E.R.S. by detonating himself but he was incinerated by the Torch, who afterwards was recruited by Cap into the AVENG.E.R.S.[18]
Immortal and King of Dreams[]
Mister Immortal was recruited into the AVENG.E.R.S. and sent by Night Thrasher to investigate the dimension inside the Monolith with Hercules. Due to their immortality, the two were able to survive inside the Monolith long enough to discover that the tower itself possessed a consciousness.[19]
Night Thrasher received no response from the Mansion when he reported his findings and the returning Wonder Man and She-Hulk discovered that the Mansion was covered in thick cobwebs and Jarvis, Cap, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi, Photon, Lightning and Wasp were stuck in deep sleep. She-Hulk and Wonder Man were attacked and put to sleep by the webs but Wonder-Man sent out a telepathic distress signal before losing consciousness, which was received by Somnus.[20] Somnus appeared at the Mansion and encountered Hercules, who had been sent by Night Thrasher to investigate. The two sent themselves to the Dreamscape to free the AVENG.E.R.S. from the nightmare that trapped them. There, they found the AVENG.E.R.S.' trapped consciousnesses and encountered the culprit behind the attack: Cobweb.[21]Paraphernalia
