Levels of Prevention

Prevention is practiced at four levels: primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primordial prevention targets entirely healthy populations through education to prevent risk factors. Primary prevention avoids disease onset through promotion of healthy behaviors. Secondary prevention focuses on early detection and treatment for those at risk or beginning stages of illness. Tertiary prevention aims to slow disease progression and rehabilitation for those with permanent disabilities.

Levels Of Prevention

Dr. C.B. Bello

Introduction

• Prevention of health problems is a major part

of community health practice.

• Prevention means thinking ahead & and

avoiding problems that may likely occur or
identifying them as early as possible to reduce
likely disability & and impairment.
Levels of Prevention
• Prevention is practiced on 4 levels
• Primordial prevention
• Primary prevention
• Secondary prevention
• Tertiary prevention
Primordial Prevention

 This is a form of primary prevention.

 Targets are people who are healthy and have
no risk factors.

 Prevention is targeted towards prevention of

the development of risk factors in populations
in which they have not developed.
Primordial Prevention Contd
 Individual and population education are the main
strategy

 Health education to promote healthy lifestyle and

disease prevention are emphasized

 This includes healthy eating, physical exercise,

stress management personal and environmental
health etc.
Primary Prevention

 Primary prevention avoids the occurrence of a health

problem.

 It predates disease or dysfunction state and is applied to a

generally healthy population.

 Target is people who are at risk but are yet to develop the
disease

 It involves steps that are taken to prevent the occurrence

of the disease
Primary prevention contd

 The aim of primary prevention is health promotion

through health education

 Activities are focused towards maintaining and

improving the general health of individual, family,
group and the community.

 Health education targets personal hygiene,

immunization rest & recreation, environmental
sanitation, waste disposal, vector control etc.
Secondary Prevention

 Focuses on individuals who already developed

health problems or illness and are at risk of
developing complications or worsening conditions.

 Strategies are geared towards early detection &

and treatment at the earliest possible stage when
disease or impairment already exists.
Secondary Prevention Contd

 Activities are directed at early diagnosis, prompt

intervention, and monitoring thereby reducing the

severity of the disease

 And enabling the patient to return to a normal level

of health as early as possible

 The aim is to hinder the progress of disease and

prevent the development of complications
Tertiary Prevention

 Tertiary prevention measures begin when a

defect or disability occurs permanently and
becomes irreversible

 Actions at this level are targeted at slowing

down the extent and severity of a
disease/disability to reduce complications and
prevent it from getting worse.
Tertiary Prevention Contd

 Activities are directed towards rehabilitation.

 It is aimed at returning the client to the highest level of

functioning possible.

 Examples of activities at this level includes post-

mastectomy exercise program/physiotherapy to restore
functioning, treatment, and management of diabetes to
slow down the progress rate.
