What is Philippine riddle?

Filipino riddles, also known as "bugtong,"


consist of two-liner statements, questions or
phrases that has double or hidden meaning.
The description may seem straightforward, but
sometimes, you need to think outside of the
box to solve them.
What are the purpose of riddles?

Riddles can support children's problem


solving, logic and critical thinking skills. If
we wrestle with a riddle for a period of time it
can help our concentration, focus and brain
dexterity. Riddles can be a wonderful
challenge which help to motivate children to
continue working.
What kind of literary device is a riddle?

A riddle is a question, a puzzle, a phrase,


or a statement devised to get unexpected
or clever answers. It is a folklore genre as
well as rhetorical device, often having
veiled or double meanings
What exactly made it unique?

Amongst locals, a riddle is known as either


“bugtong or palaisipan.” Filipinos are known for
their elaborate siesta periods, perhaps during
these times and other free time during the day or
weekend are they able to enjoy answering
riddles. Whatever made it famous, can be
largely due to how it managed to connect to the
normal Filipinos always using it.

What is the region of Ibanag?
The Ibanag ( also Ybanag and Ybanak or Ibanak) are an
ethnolinguistic minority numbering a little more than a
half million people, who inhabit the provinces of
Cagayan, Isabela, and Nueva Vizcaya.

Ibanag "unoni" or proverbs are either in prose or


poetry. hey are preachy and pedagogic as well as
theological. Awan tu umune ta uton ng ari umuluk ta
davvun. (Nobody goes up who does not come
down)
• The Ibanag originated in the region
around the mouth of the Cagayan River
and gradually dispersed southward
within the last 200 years, influencing
groups like the Itawis, Isinay, and
Gaddang.
• Ibanag is the lingua franca for trade in
the area.
What are the tribes in Cagayan?

Ilocano was the most prominent ethnic group in


Cagayan. Of the total household population,
68.57 percent classified themselves as Ilocanos.
The next three prominent ethnic groups were
the Itawit (8.63 percent), Ibanag (8.51 percent)
and Itawis (7.81 percent).
Ibanag “unoni” or proverbs are either I prose or poetry.
They are preachy and pedagogic as well as thelogical.
• Awan tu umune ta uton ng ari umuluk ta davvun.
(Nobody goes up who does not come down.)

• Mamatugu ka ta gayan nga manututtu ta matam.


( You rear a crow that pecks your eyes.)
• Mammula ka ta mapia, gataban nu noka.
( He who sows goodness, reaps gratitude.)

• I buruasi nga inikkao, nu ari atazzi, alawa nikaaw.


( Borrowed clothes are either loose or tight.)

• Awat tu serbi na ru nga kukua, nu marake I


pinangngapangngua.
( Wealth is useless if character is worthless.)
IBANAG RIDDLES

A “palavun” (riddle) is any misleading, mystifying or puzzling


question to be solved or guessed, either as a mere game or a
more serious challenge.
• For Ibanags, it is both a folk amusement or a mental excursion.
• It is aimed at relaxation, entertainment and at pacifying anger
and feuds.
Example:
Nu magitubang atannang, nu
manaddak, alinno.
( When it sits, it is tall, when it stands it is
small.)
