ME211 Thermodynamics - Spring 2025

Homework #2
(Due: 19th, March, Wednesday, by 18:00 PM)

Reading Assignment
1. Read Chapters 3.5~3.8 and 4.1~4.5, 5.1~5.3 of the textbook. Review and practice with
Examples 3.1–3.13 and 4.1–4.13, 5.1–5.3. Review the Topic of Special Interest in
Chapters 3 and 4.

Problem Set
1. 1 kg of water vapor at 200 kPa fills the 1.1989-m3 left
chamber of a partitioned system shown in figure on the
right. The right chamber has twice the volume of the
left and initially evacuated. Determine the pressure of
the water after the partition has been removed and
enough heat has been transferred so that the
temperature of the water is 3°C.

2. A piston-cylinder device contains 0.005 m3 of liquid water

and 0.9 m3 of water vapor in equilibrium at 600 kPa. Heat
is transferred at constant pressure until the temperature
reaches 200°C.
a. What is the initial temperature of the water?
b. Determine the total mass of the water.
c. Calculate the final volume.
d. Show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.

3. 1 kg of water fills a 150-L rigid container at an initial

pressure of 2 MPa. The container is then cooled to 40°C.
Determine the initial temperature and the final pressure
of the water.

4. A rigid tank whose volume is unknown is

divided into two parts by a partition. One side
of the tank contains an ideal gas at 927°C. The
other side is evacuated and has a volume twice
the size of the part containing the gas. The
partition is now removed and the gas expands to
fill the entire tank. Heat is now transferred to
the gas until the pressure equals the initial pressure. Determine the final temperature
of the gas.

5. A gas is compressed from an initial volume of 0.42 m3 to a final

volume of 0.12 m3. During the quasi-equilibrium process, the
pressure changes with volume according to the relation P=aV+b,
where a=−1200 kPa/m3 and b=600 kPa. Calculate the work done
during this process (a) by plotting the process on a P-V diagram and
finding the area under the process curve and (b) by performing the
necessary integrations.

6. A piston-cylinder device initially contains 0.6 m3 of saturated water vapor at 250 kPa.
At this state, the piston is resting on a set of stops, and the mass of the piston is such
that a pressure of 300 kPa is required to move it. Heat is now slowly transferred to the
steam until the volume doubles. Show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to
saturation lines and determine (a) the final temperature, (b) the work done during this
process, and (c) the total heat transfer. The previous figure has been removed.

7. A mass of 15 kg of air in a piston-cylinder device is heated from

25 to 95°C by passing current through a resistance heater inside
the cylinder. The pressure inside the cylinder is held constant at
300 kPa during the process, and a heat loss of 60 kJ occurs.
Determine the electric energy supplied, in kWh.

8. A spring-loaded piston-cylinder device contains 5 kg of helium

as the system, as shown in figure on the right. This system is
heated from 100 kPa and 20°C to 800 kPa and 160°C.
Determine the heat transferred to and the work produced by
this system (Hint: Once you calculate the volume at the final
state, you will find that the spring’s behavior is a bit strange.
The spring seems to have negative stiffness (spring constant).
Please assume that the pressure inside the cylinder is a linear
function of its volume).
