Alert Operators Transmission ATA Chapter: 24
Subject: RESTORATION OF AC GENERATOR P/N 31342-003/-001
2. REASON
2.1 FACTS
Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS) has received from the Operators some AC Generator P/N 31342-001 and
P/N 31342-003 failure incidents.
The root cause of these events has been a bearing failure precipitated by a loss of lubrication leading to a
misalignment between rotor and stator and the consequent excessive friction between them. These facts cause the
AC Generator to collapse.
2.2 CONSEQUENCES
The resulting consequences could be important damages in the engine elements due to overheating, fire or impacts
of detached parts that could lead to a degradation or loss of the engine.
2.3 AIM
The aim of this AOT is to inform all operators about the importance of perform the implementation of the Vendor
Service Bulletin SB31342-00X-24-01 which was published by SAFRAN-Goodrich in order to improve the reliability
of the AC Generator and, therefore, mitigate this failure mode. AC Generators post Vendor Service Bulletin
SB31342-00X-24-01 acquire P/N 31342-006.
2.4 INVESTIGATION
The root cause of this problem is the inaccurate sealing of the Anti-Drive End (ADE) and Drive End (DE) bearings
that cause the loss of lubrication. The entry of water into the engine during the aircraft exterior washes, as well as
the operation in adverse environmental conditions could precipitate this failure and lead the AC Generator to its
inoperability.
Vendor Service Bulletin SB31342-00X-24-01 introduces bearing shields to the inboard and outboard sides of the
Anti-Drive End (ADE) bearing. Also, bearings are replaced on the Drive End (DE) and Anti-Drive End (ADE). This

modification substantially increases the bearing reliability, and therefore mitigates the failure mode detailed in this
AOT.
Perform the task described in the following paragraph (3.2 DESCRIPTION) on AC Generators P/N 31342-001/-003
at the next 1.000 FH from TSO (time since overhaul) or TSN (time since new).
For those AC Generators which have already overcame such 1000 FH, Airbus DS recommends to perform the task
within 100 FH (or 3 months, whichever first occur), from the publishing of this AOT.
3.2 DESCRIPTION
a) For all CN-235 aircraft excluding Series 300M; perform the MRBD Section B task 24.001 “A.C Generators-
Restore to require standard”.
b) For CN-235 aircraft Series 300M; perform the MRBD Section B task 24.22.00.02 “A.C Generators-Restore to
require standard”.
3.2.1 ACCESS
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU ISOLATE ALL THE CIRCUITS IN MAINTENANCE BEFORE YOU SUPPLY ELECTRICAL
POWER TO THE AIRCRAFT.
WARNING: BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINES, MAKE SURE THAT WARNING NOTICES ARE IN THE CORRECT POSITION
TO SHOW THE DANGEROUS AREA.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU MOVE THE COMPONENT. THIS COMPONENT IS HEAVY.

4. FURTHER INFORMATION
This AOT can be considered as closed for a particular aircraft once its two AC Generators are post Vendor Service
Bulletin SB31342-00X-24-01, and therefore P/N 31342-006.
