Collaboration Exercise Group 8

1. This document contains a group assignment with multiple parts that involve classifying elements, compounds, and mixtures. It also involves classifying physical and chemical changes and solving stoichiometry problems. 2. The stoichiometry problems calculate the mass of CCl4 in a flask, determine which metal (silver or gold) would have a lesser mass, calculate percentage compositions of compounds, determine the molecular formula of naphthalene, and determine the empirical and molecular formulas of a gas sample. 3. All problems are fully explained with clear work shown to reach the solutions.

C 1. baking soda Het 6. hollow block

E 2. platinum M 7. urine
M 3. muriatic acid C 8. chalk
C 4. alcohol E 9. copper wire
E 5. diamond C 10. ascorbic acid

Part III. Problem solving

1. A flask that has a mass of 345.8 g is filled with 225 mL of CCl4. The mass of the flask
and CCl4 is found to be 703.55 g. Calculate:
a. the mass of CCl4, and
Mass of CCl4 = 703.55 g - 345.8 g = 357.75 g
b. its density in kg/L
Density = Mass / Volume
Density = 357.75 g / 225 ml = 1.59 g/ml
(1.59 g /1 ml) x (1kg / 1000g) x (1000ml / 1L) = 1.59 kg/L
2. Silver and gold have a density of 10.5 g/cm3 and 19.3 g/cm3, respectively. Which
would have a lesser mass, 5 cm3 Ag or 5 cm3 Au?

- Clearly, Silver will have a lesser mass, as it has a lesser density than gold.

Explanation:

DENSITY = Mass/volume
MASS OF SILVER = 10.5g.cm - 3x5cm3 = 52.5g
MASS OF GOLD = 19.3g.cm- 3x5cm3 = 100g

3. Find the percentage composition of: a. Ca in Ca(OH)2 b. CuSO4 in CuSO4 .5H2O.

A. Ca in Ca(OH)2 = 54.09%

Elements Number of atoms x Mass of element = Total mass of element Percentage composition

Ca 1 x 40.08 = 40.08 40.0874.10x100= 54.09%

O 2 x 16.00 = 32.00 32.0074.10x100= 43.18%

H 2 x 1.01 = +2.02 2.0274.10x100= 2.73%

Total: 74.10 g/mol =100%

B. CuSO4 in CuSO4 .5H2O = 36.06%

CuSO4 .5H2O → 5(molar mass of water)

CuSO4 .5H2O 5(18.00)
↓ =90.00 g/mol
Molar mass of whole compound
M = 159.61 g/mol + 90.00 g/mol m= 249.61 g/mol
%Composition = 90.00 g/mol249.61 g/molx100
%composition = 36.06%
4. Naphthalene is a soft covalent solid often used in mothballs. Its molar mass is 128
g/mol and it contains 93.75% carbon and 6.25% hydrogen. Determine the molecular
formula of naphthalene.

C = 93.71/12 = 7.8 H = 6.29/ 1 = 6.29

C = RATIO: 7.8/6.29 = 1.25 H = 6.29/6.29 = 1

Empirical Formula = C H 5 4

5(12) + 4(1)n = 128 (C5H4)2

60 + 4n = 128
n = 128/64
n=2

Molecular formula of naphthalene = C10H8

5. Gas X is found to be 24.0% carbon and 76% fluorine by mass.

a. Determine the empirical formula of gas X.
b. Given that the molar mass of gas X is 200 g/mol, determine its molecular formula.

A.

Elements Mass (g) Atomic mass No. of moles Ratio (n/n*)

g/mol (n=m/atomic mass)

C 24 12 24/12=2 2/2=1

F 76 19 76/19=4 4/2=2

Total basis =100.00 CF

1 2

Therefore the Empirical Formula of Gas X is C1F2

B.

GIVEN EMPIRICAL MASS R= MM/EM

E.F CF2 C=2 200 g/mol / 50g/mol

=4

F= 19x2 = 38
12+38=50

MM 200g/mol

M.F = [CF2] x 4 = C4F8

The Molecular formula of the Gas X is C4F8
