How well do Malaysians manage waste? This question is crucial as Malaysia generates
about 38,699 tonnes of solid waste every day or about 1.17kg per person. According to a
media report on waste collection data, in 2019 the country generated about 37,462 tonnes of
waste daily. This rose to 38,081 tonnes in 2020 and 38,699 tonnes in 2021. This year it is
expected to rise to 39,936 tonnes. Environment and waste management specialist Dr Theng
Lee Chong believes waste management in Malaysia should be seen from different angles.

Malaysians are doing well in terms of coverage and collection however, landfills which is not
effective stay as as the most common disposal method. It was reported in October 2021 that
there are 141 solid waste landfills in Malaysia. Of these, 116 are open dump sites, 21 are
sanitary landfills; which are engineered with anti-pollution features to allow safe
decomposition, and four are residual waste landfills. More than 85% are still considered as
open dumping and less than 15% are sanitary dump sites. These numbers reflect how the
lacking in disposal management.

Long-term impacts depend on the types of waste dump in our landfills. Biodegradable waste
will eventually decompose. However, non-biodegradable waste, such as one-time-use
plastics will remain for years to come. There is also the worry about leachate pollution.
Leachate that escapes from a landfill can contaminate groundwater, surface waters and soil,
potentially polluting the environment and harming human health. Hence, mainstreaming
waste management is important, and the government should introduce a more stringent
approach to control waste generators. Awareness is important but attitude change is vital
among Malaysians.

Ecoknights vice-president Amlir Ayat said the government has a good waste management
framework at the federal and state levels. Nevertheless, at the implementation phase,
several issues, particularly public and industrial participation are of concern. For instance,
the lack of active involvement could be traced to, among others, motivational and
enforcement challenges. He added that education is the only viable solution. Applying the
3R method (reduce, reuse, recycle) at all levels from individual to government and corporate
sectors would be the best bet.

Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Malaysia chief executive officer Andrew Sebastian
said Malaysians are not managing their waste well. A lot of evidence of poor waste
management by people can be seen everyday. For example, there are those who throw
rubbish out of their cars or leave behind lots of trash after picnic sessions or beach visits.
Malaysians also do not manage waste well in their own households; waste ending up in
drains, rivers and even the ocean. The small amounts of plastic waste thrown on roads, clog
drains and eventually contribute to flash floods.

PART B (15 marks)

Read the article carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Influencers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Influencer marketing continues to grow in
its popularity. In fact, the influencer marketing industry is on track to be worth $15 billion in
2022. For many being an influencer seems like the dream. You get to go to cool events, are
sent free products, have thousands to even millions of people who look up to you. This
lifestyle seems almost too good to be true. There is a common misconception that
influencers do not work that hard, which is quite far from the truth. Like just about everything,
being an influencer has its pros and cons. It is not all just a glamorous lifestyle and posting a
picture to Instagram every now and then. It takes hard work, dedication, and some thick skin.

Part of what comes with having an established platform as an influencer is having eyes on
them all the time. The audience may expect them to behave in a certain way thus,
influencers must be constantly mindful of their actions. It is important to maintain consistency
of the demands that come from the influencer lifestyle or their engagement suffers.

The next harsh truth is that it’s impossible to please everyone, and every influencer is bound
to have critics or “haters”. It takes thick skin to be an influencer as there will be people who
do not have kind things to say or may even attack them. The “cancel culture” on social
medias is a powerful force that can seriously damage an influencers career if they are not
careful.

Being an influencer too does not provide much job security. The competition in the influencer
space is fierce. An influencer must constantly be thinking of new and exciting content to
keep their audience engaged and growing. They must also be searching for new
sponsorships or brand partnerships continuously to keep their income afloat and remain
financially stable thus provide that extra sense of job security. This is why being passionate
about the particular niche or industry in which an influencer is influencing is important.

Last but not least, influencers must be authentic and post things they genuinely believe in
and support. Once an influencer loses the trust of a follower, it is difficult to get it back. It is
essential that an influencer maintains their integrity and only promotes products or events
that align well with their brand and that they genuinely believe in. This will pay off more in the
long run.
