 Sir Mohan Lal- an arrogant middle-aged man
 Lady Lal or Lachmi- wife of Mohan Lal and loves to chew betel leaves.

2. Where was Mohan Lal found for the first time in the story? 
Answer:
He was found for the first time in the first class waiting room of railway
compartment.
3. How was the mirror in the waiting room? 
Answer:
The mirror in the waiting room was broken and the red oxide at it’s back had
come off at several places.

4. “I have finished with it.” What does ―it refer? 


Answer:
It refers to: The Times”
5. Why did Lachmi’s relative not come to her husband’s house?
Answer:
Because her husband Mohan Lal did not like her poor, illiterate relatives
hanging around the bungalow. 
6. Based on the story, how would you define Karma? 
Answer:
Karma is the result of someone’s actions. I believe that every action has its
consequence’s.

What’s Is It
Going back to the literary model, Karma, what is the plot of the story? Can you
give the plot of the story? 

Plot:
Mohan Lal was a middle-aged man who worked in the British Raj. He was
ashamed to be an Indian hence he tried to speak in English or in Anglicized
Hindustani and to dress as if a high-ranked British official. He used to fill the
crossword puzzles of newspapers, which he did to show his immense knowledge in
English. His wife Lachmi was a traditional Indian woman and due to this
difference they were not having a sweet married life.
How will you describe the characters in the story? Can you tell the appearance,
way of thinking, feeling, etc. of the characters in our story? 
Characters: 

Sir Mohan Lal 


Answer:

Answer:
She is extremely ordinary and simple lady, poor and illiterate. She wore a dirty sari
which point out that she’s an ordinary and typical woman.. Lachmi is cautious,
conservative and simple.

Soldiers
They are self-centered, careless and aggressive. The attitudes and aggressive
behaviors of the British soldiers taught Sir Mohan Lal a lesson and a punishment of
his own aristocracy.

Theme: 
The theme of the story is “PRIDE will cost you EVERYTHING but leave you with
NOTHING”

Setting: 
The setting of the story takes place in a train station in India.
What is the conflict in the story? 
Conflict: 
The conflict in the story is Mohan Lal’s negative outlook towards India and
Indians.

What is the point of view in the story? How is it told? 


Point of view: 
It is the 3rd person point of view.

What is the tone of the story? 


Tone: 
Karma presents a relevant topic in the typical humorous way of Khushwant Singh.
Style of narration used by the author is third person which add to the beauty of the
story.

Characters Rose Ann

Vincent

Settings School
Plot Rose Ann and Vincent were best friends. They are always together until they went home
after school. Vincent has a hidden feeling for her, he always wanted to support her in
everything and make her laugh. One day a guy from another section went to meet Rose Ann
after school to confess his feeling to her. She was with Vincent when he confesses his
feelings towards her. After that, she told Vincent that she also has feelings for that guy and
he was very jealous that it made him furious. The next day in school he ignored her the
whole day leaving her in curiosity about what’s going on. She was hurt not just because he
was ignoring her but also because he was hanging out and having fun with their other
classmates. Both of them waited each other to reach out first but no one made a move. Their
classmates notice the tension between the two of them so they talk to them separately to
know what’s going on. Both of them share their resentment towards each other to their
classmates and they advise to the both of them to talk and fix the problem together. After
having a serious conversation the two of them apologizes to each other and settle
everything. The next day everything went back to normal and their friendship became
stronger than before.
Conflict Vincent can’t accept that her best friend likes somebody else and Rose Ann was jealous
seeing her best friend hanging out with other people.

Point of View Third Person point of view.


Theme Friendship and Jealousy

From the examples of what you have written above based on your own experience,
develop that into a short story.

1. Going back to the story, Karma, what is the theme of the story?
How does the writer present the theme of the story? 
The writer presents the Theme of the story as "Pride Cross before
a fall". It is the story of an arrogant person who feels bad about his
culture, lifestyle etc. He is reluctant to his wife because she is an
ordinary woman who is unable to impart foreign culture into her
life.
2. Compare and contrast the two persons (Mohan Lal and Lachmi)
in the story. Write your answer in your notebook.
 Sir Mohan Lal was an Anglicized Indian who took pride in
everything British and hated anything that was Indian. His
treatment of Indians was so cruel that he was ashamed to travel
even with his wife and did not like his in-laws. On the other hand
Lachmi was an extremely ordinary and simple lady who did not
even reciprocate the hatred of her husband. She thought of herself
as a submissive, docile wife of an aggressive, flamboyant person.
Lachmi could mix freely with the lower class people and was
comfortable with everything common and Indian.
