What’s New

Princess wrapped a gift and place it in a box with square faces with equal length
of sides for her friend in preparation for the Christmas season. If she consumed
a 600 in2 wrapping paper, what is the length of the side of the box?

Solution:

The surface area of a cube is equal to SA = 6s2, where s is the length of the
side of the cube.

600 = 6𝑠 2 Analyze and represent

1 1 Apply properties of equality
(600) = 6 (6𝑠 2 )
6
100 = 𝑠 2 Simplify
√100 =√𝑠 2 Extract the root of both sides of the
equation
10 in= s or s =10 in

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING RADICALS

What is It

Here are the steps in solving word problems.

1. Read and analyze the problem carefully.

2. Illustrate the problem.
3. Develop the plan to solve it.
4. Solve the problem.
5. Looking back

Example 1.

Diana is thinking of a number whose square root is 6. What number is she

looking for?
Solution:

Let x be the number. Analyze and represent.

√𝑥 = 6 Radical equation
(√𝑥)2 = (6)2 Square both sides of the equation
x = 36 Simplify
√𝑥 = 6 Checking
√36 = 6
The number that Diana is looking for
is 36.

Example 2
Ronald wants to make a square table with an area of 100 ft2.What is the length
of the side of the square table? Hint: The formula for the area of square is
A= s2 where s is the side of the square.
Solution:

100 ft2 = s2 Analyze and represent

√100𝑓𝑡 2 = √𝑠 2 Extract the square root
10 ft = s Simplify
2 Checking:
A=s
2
100 = 10
100 = 100
The length of the side of the table is 10ft. Conclusion

Area = 100 ft2

Example 3

A wire is anchor on a 10 meters electric post. One part is attached to the top
of the electric post and the other is 8 meters from the base of the post. How
long is the wire? Express your answer to the nearest whole number. Hint: Use
the Pythagorean formula c2 = a2 + b2 where a, b are the legs and c is the
hypotenuse of the right triangle.
Given:
height of the pole (h) = 10 meters

distance from the base of post and

the wire = 8 meters

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Let a =10 and b = 8 Analyze and represent.
c = √102 + 82 Equation
c = √100 + 64 Simplify
c = √164 Extract the square root
c = √(4)(41)
c = 2√41 Simplify
c = √102 + 82 Checking
√164 = √100 + 64
√164 = √164
2√41 = 2√41
The length of the wire is 2√𝟒𝟏 m Conclusion

What’s More

A wire is anchored on a 9-meter pole. One part is attached to the top of the pole
