II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT


Talking in front of an audience is quite a challenge especially to those who are not used
to it and who are experiencing stage freight, but what is more challenging is how to write
an effective speech that is appropriate to the kind of audience that you have. In this learning
activity sheet, you will be introduced to the principles of effective speech writing and
practice tasks are provided for you to apply what you have learned. Happy learning!

Know your audience (Audience Profile or Analysis). Understanding the audience will
help you prepare an effective speech just bear in mind their demography, situation, and
psychology.

These are the things to consider in speech writing. Understand the purpose of writing
these are: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. Follow the stages in writing such as
choosing the topic wherein you have to decide what topic you will write, narrowing down
the topic is making the idea more definite, data gathering is collecting information from a
source, writing pattern is an organization of ideas based from a structure, outlining is the
relationship of ideas listed, revising includes correcting errors in grammar, cohesion and
coherence and the like, and rehearsing means reading aloud the written speech for
feedbacking. If you follow these steps, surely you will have an effective speech delivery.

Logical organization is very much needed in preparing your speech so that it will be
organized in a manner according to the topic that you chose. Generally, some patterns will
help you organize your ideas; these are biographical, categorical, causal, chronological,
comparison/contrast, problem-solution, and spatial.

The use of a transitional device as a focus in grammar is very important in expressing


your thoughts and ideas. The proper use of words in showing the inter-relatedness of your
ideas is very crucial in speech writing.

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks

Practice Task 1. AUDIENCE ANALYSIS/PROFILE


Before you prepare your speech to be delivered, you need to conduct an Audience
Analysis by reading and analyzing the sentences below and answering the questions
that follow.

● They are studying at Mataas na Paaralan ng Binagsakan.


● He also emphasized that parents should be mindful whenever members of their family
are showing signs and symptoms of COVID 19.
● He is going to talk about the Basics and Adjusting to the New Normal since students
whose age 15 above are already allowed to get their modules in school.
● The speaker was informed that he should limit his talk to 30-50 minutes only since the
majority of the parents between 40 to below 60 works in the field and they need to be
home before lunchtime.
● His talk focuses on how to educate his audience about the proper health protocol to
be observed in this time of pandemic knowing that the students do not take this
seriously.
● In a barangay school located at the foot of Mayon Volcano, a resource speaker named
Doctor Santi Gwar was invited to give a talk to the high school students together with
their parents.
● After giving his talk, the participants were enlightened about the proper health protocol
to be observed within the school and community and ways on how to lessen the spread
of Coronavirus.

With the occurring pandemic situation, Legazpi City has been facing a setback not
only in the health sector but in the business sector as well. Because of this, most of the small-
scale businesses tend to suspend their operation or to close permanently,
(1) the economic status collides in a shaky situation that Legazpeňos suffer
from. The price hike in basic commodities hits the pocket of the average earners,
(2) the inflation creates depression, _(3) economic crisis is being
experienced (4) the city government is trying its best to exhaust all its
resources to get back to track.

The Local Government unit works hard and tries its best to revive the economy
(5) it has been vigilant in the implementation of proper health protocol
(6) prevent the spread of coronavirus. Indeed, the resiliency of the
Legazpeňo in any situation is evident in this time of the pandemic.

Practice Task 3 Determining the Purpose of Speech

Directions: Determine the following lines, whether they belong to informative,


entertainment, or persuasive speech. Write the lines in the appropriate box.

awardee in digital governance awards in December 2020. It makes Legazpeňo proud.”

5. “The panoramic view of Mt. Mayon makes Sawangan Park more relaxing. Come and
enjoy the beauty of Legazpi City.

B. ASSESSMENT

Assuming that you are a guest speaker of the school where you have graduated.
You are going to deliver a 3-paragraph speech. See to it that your speech follows the
steps in the speech writing process. Use transitional devices. Choose from the types of

with the rubric below.
