Analogy and its different types as we go along. You will be working by pair and expected to analyze the relationship
presented in an analogy.

II. GUIDED INSTRUCTION

A. Concept Notes
Analogy – shows the relationship between two pairs of words. It describes or clarifies an idea by
making a comparison between two things. However, analogies have a specific structure that will indicate
a certain relationship between the two things. The setup of the analogy will indicate that relationship.

Types of Analogy Definition Examples

Part to whole contains the part, or section of Battery; Flashlight::hard drive:
something larger, and the whole, or the computer
entire entity. The example you've already Finger: hand::petal: flower
seen shows a part to whole relationship:
Cause and Effect This analogy contains one word that is Tired : sleep :: hungry :eat
the cause, or the source of some action or Fatigue: yawning ::itching:
condition, and another word that is scratching
the effect, or the result or consequence.
Synonyms are words that mean the same thing, and Obese: fat: slender: thin
synonym analogies consist of two pairs of Find: discover: : start: begin
synonyms. The first pair of words means
the same thing, so the second pair must
mean the same thing too.
Antonyms are words that mean the opposite, and so whisper : yell :: tame : wild
antonym analogies consist of two pairs of

opposites up: down :: hot: cold
Object and In object and purpose analogies, the first

SJSFI Learning Package 2020-2021

__Monkeys__:__Banana__::____Rat___:____Cheese____

1. What do you think is the relationship between the pictures?

2. Monkeys eat bananas and rats eat cheese.

Linking Statement:

From the picture, it clearly shows that there is a relationship. You’re right that you answered cheese,
based on the first picture which is a monkey it explains that banana is what monkeys eat so for the next
picture we would focus on the same relationship from the first picture. For second picture which is rat,
they usually eat cheese so the answer for this analogy is cheese. Finding its relationship will help you
more to understand the analogy. For this lesson, You will be working by pair and expected to supply
appropriate words to complete an analogy.

II. GUIDED INSTRUCTION

A. Concept Notes
Basic relation is as follows

1 : 2 :: 3 : 4

Here, the relation of 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 is the same as the relation of 1 to 2 or 2 to 1

To solve these questions, following two simple steps are to be followed

Step I- you need to identify the relationship between the pair of numbers/letters/ words given.

Step II -Find out the other pair such that the relationship between the third and the fourth numbers/letters/words is
similar to the relationship that exists between the first and second numbers/letters/words. Now, it is clear that analogy is
established, when the two pairs on both the sides of the sign (::) bear the same relationship.

To identify the relationship between the words in the first pair, ask yourself: Are the
words synonyms or antonyms? Is the first word the cause and the second word the effect? Is
the first word a part and the second word a whole? Is the first word an item and the second
word the category?

Example:   prevent is to stop as rescue is to ________.

Prevent and stop are synonyms, which means they have similar meanings.
What is a word that has a similar meaning to rescue?
SAVE -  rescue and save are synonyms and have similar
meanings
