“So how is everybody doing today?” “We’re doing good ma’am!”

“Does anyone have an idea about “About English ma’am”

what our topic for today is?”

“That is correct, but does anyone “….”

know specifically what our topic is?”

“None? Okay class, today we are “Yes ma’am”

going to discuss definite and
indefinite articles. Are you guys
familiar with our topic?”
B. Lesson Proper

Presentation

“Good, now I have here two “The dog that bit me ran away.”
sentences. *Opens power point*
Would you all read the first one out
loud?”

“Very good class! Now please read “I saw a dog at the park”
the second one”

“Can anyone tell me which article *A student raises their hand*

was used in the first sentence? If
you want to answer, please raise
your hand”

“Yes Pia?” “The first sentence uses definite

article, ma’am”

“Very good Pia! Can you identify the “The definite article ‘the’ was
article that was used in the first used in the first sentence,
sentence?” ma’am”

“Great job Pia! Now what about the

second one?” *A student raises their hand*

“Yes Kenneth?”
“The second sentence uses
indefinite article, ma’am”
“Well done Kenneth! Can you
identify the article that was used in “The indefinite article ‘a’ was
the second sentence?” used in the second sentence,
ma’am”
“Excellent Kenneth!”

Discussion

“So basically, an article is a type of

adjective. Like adjectives, articles
modify nouns. English has three
articles; the, a, and an. ‘The’ is used
to refer to specific or particular
nouns. ‘A/an’ is used to modify non-
specific or non-particular nouns. We
call ‘the’ definite article and ‘a/an’
indefinite article.”

“Definite articles are used with

singular and plural, countable and
uncountable nouns when both the
speaker and the listener know the
thing or idea.”

“Here are some examples. Would

you all please read”
“The car that he drives is parked
outside.”

“The boy in yellow shirt was

standing at the gate.”

“We ate at the Mexican

“Great job everyone! So here restaurant down the block last
definite articles were used because night.”
they were talking about a specific
thing or a particular person.”

“The car that he drives, the boy in

yellow shirt, and the Mexican
restaurant. As you can see, these
are all specific subjects.”

“Let us now move on to indefinite

articles. Indefinite articles on the
other hand, are used before a noun
that is general or unspecified.”

“Let us turn our previous examples

of definite articles into indefinite
articles. I’ll do the first sentence
then you guys do the other two, “Yes ma’am”
okay?”

“Good. For the first sentence, ‘the

car that he drives’ is the specific
subject. To turn the sentence into
indefinite, we will remove the
identification of the subject.”

“A car is parked outside”

“Here, we generalized the subject.

It is no longer identified as the car
that he drives. It’s simply just a car
now. We don’t know whose car it is,
we don’t know what its color is, and
we don’t know anything about it.
Therefore, we use the indefinite
article ‘a’.”

“Now for the second example, does

anyone want to volunteer?”

“Yes Trisha?” *A student raises their hand*

“Great job Trisha! Now it is

indefinite because the boy is “A boy was standing at the gate.”
unknown.”

“How about the third one?”

“Yes Jairuz?” *A student raises their hand*

“Very good Jairuz! Here we don’t “We ate at a restaurant last

know what kind of restaurant it is or night.”
where it is located which is why we
used the indefinite article ‘a’.”

“Now class, do you know when to

use indefinite articles ‘a’ and ‘an’?”

“Can someone explain it to me? “Yes ma’am”

“None? Okay, let me explain it then.

The indefinite article ‘a’ is used “….”
before a singular noun beginning
with a consonant sound. While the
indefinite article ‘an’ is used before
a singular noun beginning with a
vowel sound.”

“Is it clear now?”

Generalization “Yes ma’am”

“How many articles are there in

English again?”

“And what are those?” “Three ma’am”

“Which is the definite article?”

“The, a and an”
“And indefinite?”
“The is the definite article
ma’am”
“Very good class! Now can
someone tell me which indefinite “A and an are the indefinite
article is used before a singular articles ma’am”
noun beginning with a consonant
sound?” *A student raises the hand*

“Yes David”

“Great job David! But what about

the singular noun beginning with a “The indefinite article ‘a’ ma’am”
vowel sound, what article should we
use?” “The indefinite article ‘an’
ma’am”
“Well done David!”

“To sum up our discussion, an

article is a type of adjective that
modifies nouns. Definite articles are
used when the subject is known,
while indefinite articles are used
when the subject is unidentified”

understood our discussion”
