Velocity - Acceleration Diagram

1. The document discusses velocity analysis of mechanisms using graphical methods. Key steps in the velocity diagram construction procedure are identified. 2. Several example problems are presented involving determination of linear and angular velocities at various points in slider-crank and four-bar linkage mechanisms. Dimensions and rotational speeds are provided. 3. Solutions involve constructing velocity diagrams to locate points and determine velocities based on given rotational speeds and link dimensions.

1/9
Valocity Analysis
1 The study involves the linear velocities of different points on different
parts of a mechanism as well as the angular velocities of the links
2 Velocity analysis is the prerequisite for acceleration analysis
Analytical method
Graphical method
3 For this study, a line or skeleton or configuration diagram is needed
4 Motion of link

Arc AA0 r δθ
Velocity of A relative to O = δt or vao = δt
When δt → 0, vao = r dθ dt

Velocity diagram construction procedure
1 Step 1 - Identify all fixed points and locate them as one point (Lower
case letters)
2 Step 2 - Draw the first known vector ab (vba = ωAB) perpendicular
to the link AB in the direction of rotation (vcb or bc and vcd dc are
unknown in magnitude)
3 Step 3 - To add vector bc, draw a line through point b and that should
be perpendicular to link BC
4 Step 4 - Through fixed point d, draw another line perpendicular to link
DC
5 Step 5 - Use intersection lines to locate another point

Problem 1
In a four link mechanism shown in Figure, the dimensions of the links are : AB = 50 mm,
BC = 66 mm, CD = 56 mm and AD = 100 mm. At the instant when ∠DAB = 60◦ , the
link AB has an angular velocity of 10.5 rad/s in the counter-clockwise direction, determine
the
1 Velocity of point C
2 Velocity of point E on the link BC when BE = 40 mm
3 Angular velocities of the links BC and CD
4 Velocity of an offset point F on the link BC if BF = 45 mm, CF = 30 mm and BCF
is read clockwise
5 Velocity of an offset point G on the link CD if CG = 24 mm, DG = 44 mm and DCG
is read clockwise
6 Velocity of rubbing at pins A, B, C and D when the radii of the pins are 30, 40, 25

and 35 mm respectively

Problem 2
In a slider-crank mechanism shown in Figure, the crank is 480 mm long and rotates at 20
rad/s in the counter-clockwise direction. The length of the connecting rod is 1.6 m. When
the crank turns 60◦ from the inner dead centre, determine the
1 Velocity of the slider
2 Velocity of a point E located at a distance 450 mm on the connecting rod extended
3 Position and velocity of a point F on the connecting rod having the least absolute
velocity
4 Angular velocity of the connecting rod

5 Velocities of rubbing at the pins of the crankshaft, crank and the cross-head having

diameters 90, 60 and 100 mm, respectively

7/9
Problem 3
Figure shows a mechanism in which OA = QC=100 mm, AB = QB = 300 mm and CD =
250 mm. The crank OA rotates at 150 rpm in the clockwise direction. Determine the
1 Velocity of the slider at D
2 Angular velocities of links QB and AB
3 Rubbing velocity at the pin B which is 40 mm in diameter

Problem 4
Figure shows the link mechanism of a quick return mechanism of the
slotted lever type, the various dimensions of which are OA = 400 mm,
OP = 200 mm, AR=700 mm, RS = 300 mm. For the configuration
shown, determine the velocity of the cutting tool at S and the angular
velocity of the link RS. The crank OP rotates at 210 rpm.
