The project that Tami won the AOL Innovation in the Community award for was essentially an early prototype of what the Young Foundation call ‘Local 2.0‘. The project used open source software to create local online communities with the goal of better bridging the economic divide and also the generational one, encouraging more participation between key social groups like the elderly and disadvantaged kids. Young has been conducting research to document this type of effect to help local councils adopt it as best practices in to their normal operations, and the objective of our overall ‘GovCloud 2.0‘ Cloud best practices program is to showcase the powerful technologies that are now available for this type of initiative. Architecting Mobile Solutions for the Enterprise Book Review

I was thrown onto a mobile project a few months ago and admittedly needed to catch up fast. My primary development environment is Microsoft's .NET and although I had been keeping up with Windows Phone, I had not been keeping up with mobile as a whole. I would go as far to say keeping up with Windows Phone was not keeping up with the mobile world at all. Luckily this book is a smorgasbord of mobile information. I purchased and printed the Rough Cuts version as soon as it came out. This book saved me tons of time getting up to speed with the latest information on the mobile world. ... (more)

Observations from Mobile World Congress 2012

I attended the 2012 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The following are my personal observations and extrapolations from the show based on my conversations with operators, customer meetings, colleagues and walking the floor. 1. LTE- Where’s the Party? – Last year was the year of LTE.  Vendors were flouting it and operators were demonstrating how it would change the world.  Even Verizon Wireless (an operator which never shows up at these things) had a big display showcasing LTE.  I think that this year the cold reality is kicking in – now that we have built... One of the most widely asked questions about Big Data today is, “How do we get valuable analytics from Big Data?” Or, how do we get the prize? As data continues to grow exponentially, so does the variety of data (structured and unstructured) coming from humans, machines and applications. In order to pull valuable information from it all, proper data gathering is critical, and the output of that data needs to be timely and accurate, with a flexible method of delivery. Unfortunately, it’s not easy...

Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
