UNIFIED COMUNICATION (UC)

ETE 4040

INTRODUCTION TO VC PROTOCOL SYSTEM

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this, SSBT;

• Explain multimedia protocols in the VC network.

H.323 PROTOCOL

 H.323
 Protocol is the base of videoconferencing systems based on IP
network.
 It is widely used in the multi-media conferences.
H.323 PROTOCOL

N-ISDN:(Narrowband Integrated Services Digital Network), it is

based on phone line.

 B-ISDN(Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network): 2Mbit/s. It
is core technology is ATM, based on N-ISDN.
 PBN: packets based network.
 GSTN (General Switch Telephone Network).
 QoS (Quality of Service): it is a kind of security mechanism which is
used for solving network delay and blocking problems.
H.323 PROTOCOL

 H: Multimedia
 H.320: N-ISDN
 H.321: B-ISDN
 H.322: LAN (QoS)
 H.323: PBN
 H.324: GSTN and WLAN

H.323 PROTOCOL
H.323 PROTOCOL - GATEKEEPER (GK) FUNCTIONS

• Call authorization:

□ Number or name translation

□ Call management

□ Bandwidth management

□ Area management

□ Call Control Signaling

H.323 PROTOCOL - GATEKEEPER (GK) FUNCTIONS

 Node registration, admission, and status (RAS) management

 When there is a GK, the terminal and the MCU are registered to
the GK.
 The GK registers and manages nodes.
 Number or name translation
 It is more convenient for users to call others with a number or name
rather than using the IP address.
 The GK translates numbers, names, and IP addresses.
H.323 PROTOCOL - GATEKEEPER (GK) FUNCTIONS

 Call management
 The GK manages call requests from nodes. Based on the bandwidth
and attributes of the node, the GK determines whether to allow that
node to initiate or receive a call. The GK can also end a call from
the node.
 Bandwidth management, area management, access control, route
management, and inter-area routing.
H.323 PROTOCOL-GATEWAY FUNCTIONS

• Device used to provide network compatibility functions, such as the

protocol translation, route selection (usually Intra-area routing), and
data exchange, when networks using different structures or protocols
interconnect with each other.
H.323 PROTOCOL - MULTI-POINT CONTROL UNIT (MCU) FUNCTIONS

• MCU: is a core device in a multipoint videoconferencing system.

• It functions as a switch.

• It :
□ Synchronizes and extracts information flows.

□ Sending these streams and signaling to the processing module for

audio, video and data switching and for route selection.

□ Finally it reassembles various information required for various

conference sites and sends it to terminals.
H.323 PROTOCOL – FUNCTIONS OF TERMINALS
• Terminal: Terminals on H.323 network is node which communicate
with other nodes , such as gateways , MCUs.
H.323 PROTOCOL STACK
H.323 PROTOCOL STACK

 Structure
 H.323: the protocol framework describes how the following protocols work together
 H.225: the protocol that defines the call signal (Q.931) and communications between
nodes and the GK (RAS)
 H.245: the conference control protocol used for capability and media control
 RTP/RTCP: the real-time transmission protocol used for transferring video and audio
data streams
 T.120 series: the protocol used for initializing a data conference in the early time
 H.239: dual-stream
 H.283: Far-End Camera Control (FECC)
H.323 PROTOCOL STACK

• Terminal Control and Management : calling

signal , negotiations , conferences control and management ;

• Media Control: audio- visual streams transmission.

• Data Applications : data transmission.

H.323 PROTOCOL STACK- ELEMENTS OF H.323 PROTOCOL SYSTEM

• H.323 : Describes how the following protocols work together

• H.225.0 RAS / Q.931: Calling protocol ( H. 320 )

• H.245: Multimedia communication control protocol

• H.235: A standard related to security

• H.239: Multi streams transmission

• H.261, H.263, H.264, G.7XX, T.120

H.323 PROTOCOL STACK - MAIN SIGNALS

• H225/RAS(Registration, Admission ,Status ) signal

• H225/Q931calling signal

• H245 multimedia control signal

• Audio-visual protocol

• Real-time transmission protocol (RTP/RTCP)

H.323 PROTOCOL STACK - MAIN SIGNALS

 H.323 is a standard protocol stack, from ITU.

 According to the functions, it can be divided into four categories :

□ Video CODEC (h.26x)

□ Audio codec (G.7 xx) system

□ Control (H.245) data stream

□ Multiplexing (H.225).
 System control is h. 323 terminals to the core of H.323 terminals .
 Whole system is controlled by H.245, control channel H 225.0 call signal
channel and RAS channel.
H.323 PROTOCOL STACK - CALL PHASES
SESSION INITIATION PROTOCOL (SIP)
SIP PROTOCOL

 RFC3261 for SIP: This document briefs the SIP, which is an

application control protocol for session establishment, change, and
termination by one or more applicants.
 Sessions includes Internet paging, multimedia distribution, and
multimedia conference.
 RFC3262 provides an optional function supporting reliability
messages of a provisional response (PRACK).
 RFC3263 is used to locate SIP servers.
SIP PROTOCOL

 RFC3264 introduces SDP models.

 RFC3265 provides an extensive notification platform a SIP node to
subscribe event reports about another SIP node.
SIP PROTOCOL

Endpoints : SIP Gateways, Servers (UAs), User Agents clients (UAc)

SIP PROTOCOL

 SIP is a peer-to-peer protocol .

 Two or more peers can start a SIP session.
 Those peers are called user agents (UA).
 UA Client: initiate a SIP session request.
 UA Server: receive a SIP session invitation.
 SIP UA can act as UA client or UA server along the SIP session, but
can not act as both functions at the same time.
SIP PROTOCOL - SIP SERVERS

• SIP server is responsible for:

□ Call setup.
□ Call tear down.
□ It does not participate in any media traffic transmission (this is
done by media server).
□ Interact with back-end services (LDAP, location, DB or XML
servers).

• SIP servers are classified as:

□ Proxy: intermediary element acts on behalf of other clients in
establishing SIP requests.
□ Redirect: allow proxy servers to redirect SIP session to external
domain.
SIP PROTOCOL - SIP SERVERS

□ Registrar : registers UAC current location requests.

□ Location servers : provides address resolution services to SIP
proxy or SIP registrar servers.
SIP PROTOCOL - SIP GATEWAY (GW)

• Gateway: A device used to provide network compatibility

functions, such as the protocol translation, route selection
(usually Intra-area routing), and data exchange, when
networks using different structures or protocols interconnect
with each other.
SIP PROTOCOL-USER AGENTS (UA)

• UA : is SIP endpoint that initiates or receives a SIP session request or

invitation to another user agent (UA).

• SIP UA can be:

• User Agent Client (UAC) : initiates a SIP session request.
• User Agent Server (UAS) : receives a SIP session invitation.

• UAc provides telephone functions:

• dial, answer, reject, hold/un-hold, and call transfer.
