FreudsPsychosexualStagesofdevelopment

Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development outlines five stages from birth to adulthood, emphasizing the role of unconscious desires and childhood experiences in shaping behavior. Each stage is associated with specific erogenous zones and potential conflicts, such as the Oedipus and Electra complexes during the phallic stage. Freud's concepts of libido, fixation, and the interplay of the id, ego, and superego are central to understanding personality development and the impact of early experiences.

Theory of

PSYCHOSEXUA
L
DEVELOPMENT
SIGMUND FREUD - an Austrian
neurologist and the founding
Father of Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis - is a branch
of psychology that focuses on
treating mental illness by
analyzing various stages of
growth and types of human
behavior.
SIGMUND FREUD’S THEORY OF
PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
 The psychoanalytic theory
believes that all humans have
unconscious desires, feelings, and
memories.
 Freud believed childhood trauma
and experience form the basis of
unwanted behavior and repressed
emotions in adulthood, including
the development of a person.
SIGMUND FREUD’S THEORY OF
PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT

Freud later formulated the

psychosexual theory of development
which includes five stages of
development from his studies.
These psychosexual stages capture
the main growth points of a person
from infancy to adulthood and focus
on different aspects of wants, needs,
and desires.
SIGMUND FREUD’S THEORY OF
PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
The three terms Freud used in this
theory:
Libido: Sexual drive or instinct
Fixation: when a person’s libido is stuck
in a particular stage of development
through overindulgence or disruption
Erogenous Zone: sensitive to sexual
stimulation (are the mouth, the anus,
and the genital region)
SIGMUND FREUD’S THEORY OF
PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
Five Stages

1. Oral Stage : Birth – 18 Months

2. Anal Stage : 18 Months – 3 Yrs.
3. Phallic Stage : 3 Yrs. – 7-8 Yrs
4. Latency Stage : 7-8 Yrs. - Puberty
5. Genital Stage : Puberty - Adulthood
Five Stages
1
ORAL STAGE
• AGE
RANGE: BIRTH TO 1
YEAR
• EROGENOUS ZONE: MOUTH
2
ANAL STAGE
•AGE RANGE: 1 - 3 YEARS
•EROGENOUS ZONE:
ANUS
ANAL STAGE
• The libido now becomes focused on the
anus and the child derives great
pleasure from defecating.
• The child is now fully aware that they are
a person in their own right and that their
wishes can bring them into conflict with
the demands of the outside world.
3
PHALLIC STAGE
• AGE RANGE: 3 - 6 YEARS
• EROGENOUS ZONE:
GENITALS
PHALLIC STAGE
 During the phallic stage, our libido turns to
the genitals as we discover the differences
between the female and the male gender.
 The child in this stage is focused on the
stimulation of the genitals.
 In the Phallic stage, gratification begins with
autoeroticism. That means masturbation.
But our need for satisfaction soon turns to
our parents, typically the parent of the
opposite sex.
PHALLIC STAGE
• Oedipus complex – the
boy develops sexual
(pleasurable) desires for
his mother. He wants to
possess his mother
exclusively and get rid of
his father to enable him
to do so.
PHALLIC STAGE
• Electra complex – It
involves a girl, aged 3 -6
yrs old, becoming
attached to her father
and increasingly hostile
towards her mother.
4
LATENCY STAGE
• AGE RANGE: 5 - PUBERTY
• EROGENOUS ZONE: NONE
LATENCY STAGE
Our libido is suppressed as our
sexual energy is sublimed into
developing life skills. Our superego
strengthens and we strongly
identify with social values, same-
sex heroes, and friends.
5
GENITAL
• AGE RANGE: PUBERTY - ADULT
STAGE
• EROGENOUS ZONE: GENITALS
GENITAL STAGE
 During this time the person directs
sexual impulses toward someone of the
opposite sex. Adolescence brings about
a reawakening of Oedipal or Electra
conflicts and a reworking of earlier
childhood identifications.
 The child is now open to learning how to
engage in mutually satisfying sexual
relationships.
GENITAL STAGE
 Adolescent adult has
mature sexual
feelings and
experiences pleasure
from sexual
relationships with
others.

Questions:

1.According to Freud what drives behavior?

2.According to Freud, how are the psychosexual stages of development and psychic
determinism involved in personality development?
3.How do the id, edo, and superego interact to influence a person’s personality?
4.How are thoughts and actions governed by the preconscious, conscious, and
unconscious?
5.Why are ego-defense mechanisms necessary?
6.Come up with a second example for each defense mechanism on your sheet(write
it on your sheet).
7.Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Freudian theory of personality
development.
