The Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world, stretching 2,400 km along the northern border of India. It consists of three parallel ranges - the Greater Himalayas, Middle Himalayas, and Outer Himalayas - with heights increasing from south to north. The Greater Himalayas contain many of the world's highest peaks, such as Mount Everest, and are characterized by heights over 6,000m and permanent snow cover. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1959.
