Mathematics - Grade 7 Lesson 1 - Sets and Set Notation: 1 Quarter
This document provides an overview of sets and set notation for 7th grade mathematics. It defines what a set is, the symbols and terminology used in sets such as elements and membership. It discusses properties of sets like well-defined sets, empty sets, and the cardinality of a set. Finally, it covers set notation and how to write sets using roster notation and set builder notation.

Lesson 1 – Sets and Set Notation
SETS What is a set? What is a set? A set is a group or collection of objects. It is named using CAPITAL letter.
Each object in a set is called a member or an
element of a set. ELEMENT
he symbol used for element
- the symbol used for not an element
Example: A = {school days in a week} A = {Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri} Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri are called the members or elements of a given set. 1) Monday ____∈ A ∈ A 2) Thursday ____ ∉A 3) Sunday ____ A = {even number} B = {odd number} Example: C = {counting number} Fill in the blanks with ∈or ∉. ∈ A 1) 2 ____ ∈ C 3) 7 ____ ∉ B 2) 8 ____ ∈ B 4) 3 ____ ∉ C 5) -2 ____ ∉ A 6) 5 ____ What is a well-defined set?
A set is a well-defined set if they have a
common characteristics. Example: 1) A = {set of primary colors} WDS 2) B = {set of beautiful girls in school} NWDS 3) C = {set of months in a year} WDS 4) D = {set of popular actors} NWDS 5) A = {set of excellent singers} NWDS 6) A = {set of even numbers} WDS What is an empty set or null set?
A set with no member or elements. It is
denoted by the symbol { } for empty set and for the null set. Examples: 1) A = { set of triangles with 4 sides} 2) B = { set of months in year start with B} 3) C = { set of whole numbers less than 0} What is a cardinality of a set?
The cardinality of a set refers to number of
elements in a given set.It is denoted by the symbol n.
The cardinality of set A is written as
n(A). Examples: Determine the cardinality in each set. 1) A = { a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k} n(A) = 11 finite
2) B = { x/x is a month of the year} n(B) = 12 finite
3) C = { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, … } cannot be defined
The number of elements in
the set is infinite. SET NOTATION What is a set notation?
Set notation is used to define the elements
and illustrate properties of sets using symbols. 2 ways in writing a set
1) Roster Notation – the set is written as a list of all
elements inside a pair of braces { } and is denoted by a capital letter.
Each distinct elements is written once
and the order of elements does not matter. Example: Name the following sets and then list their corresponding elements using roster notation. Choose any capital letter to name the set.
1) The set of major islands in the Philippines.
Answer: A = {Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao}
2) The set of natural numbers less than 5
Answer: B = {1, 2, 3, 4} 2) Set builder notation – the set is described by writing the characteristic of the elements. The symbol | is translated as “such that”
A = {x|x is a counting numbers less than 10}
set A is the set of all values of x such that x is a counting numbers less than 10 Example: Convert the following sets to a set builder notation.
1) C = {Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday}
