Golden Notes: Robotics - Unit 1 & 2

Unit 1: Introduction to Robotics

**Robot**ics & **Robot**s

**Definition**: **Robot**ics - Tech field focused on design, construction, and operation of robots.

**Definition**: **Robot** - ISO: A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator for automated tasks.

Origin of '**Robot**'

- Derived from Czech word "robota", meaning forced labor.

Four Ds of **Robot**ics

- Dull, Dirty, Dangerous, Dear

Laws of **Robot**ics (Isaac Asimov, 1942)

1. Do not harm humans.

2. Obey humans (unless violates Law 1).

3. Protect self (unless violates Laws 1 or 2).

Major Milestones in **Robot**ics History

- 1961 - **Unimate**: First industrial robot (General Motors)

- 1972 - **WABOT**-1: First humanoid intelligent robot (Waseda University)

- 1984 - **WABOT**-2: Played music using 10 fingers

- 1999 - Sony **AIBO**: **Robot**ic dog

- 2002 - **Roomba**: **Robot**ic vacuum cleaner

- 2016 - **Sophia**: Social humanoid robot

Classification of **Robot**s

- By Application: Industrial, Special-purpose, AGVs, Walking, Parallel

- By Movement: Stationary, Mobile

- By **Control**: Remote-controlled, Smart robots

Golden Notes: Robotics - Unit 1 & 2

- By Environment: Underwater, Space, Aerial, Ground

- By Collaboration: Cobots

**Applications** of **Robot**ics

- Manufacturing: Welding, 3D printing, painting

- Healthcare: Surgery, rehab

- Agriculture: Harvesting, weeding

- Logistics: AGVs, AMRs

- Space: Rovers, satellite servicing

- Construction: Bricklaying, drones

- Environment: Monitoring oceans, crops

- Security: Surveillance

- Entertainment: Animatronics

**Robot**ic System Subsystems

- **Motion**: Physical structure

- **Recognition**: Sensors for awareness

- **Control**: Processes info & controls actions

Golden Notes: Robotics - Unit 1 & 2

Unit 2: Materials & Mechanical Components

**Robot** Frame (Chassis)

Materials: MDF, Acrylic, Aluminium, Steel

Wheels Used in **Robot**s

- Standard Wheel: One-directional

- Caster Wheel: Rotates freely, not driven

- Omni Wheel: Multi-directional with rollers

- Mecanum Wheel: Multi-directional, angled rollers

Links & Joints

- Links: **Robot** parts

- Joints: Connect links for movement

Types of Joints

- **Revolute**: Rotation (1 DoF)

- **Prismatic**: Linear (1 DoF)

- **Cylindrical**: Rotation + Linear (2 DoF)

- **Spherical**: All 3 rotations (3 DoF)

- **Planar**: Translation + Rotation (3 DoF)

**Degrees of Freedom** (DoF)

- Number of independent movements

- Rigid body has 6 DoF: 3 translational + 3 rotational
