RE UT Transportation I

This document outlines the First Internal Assessment for the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil program at Everest Engineering College, focusing on Transportation Engineering-I. It includes two main questions requiring students to design geometric features for road alignment and calculate vertical curves, as well as to discuss penetration grade in bitumen and sustainable transportation strategies. The assessment consists of a total of 30 marks, with a pass mark of 14, and is to be completed in one hour.

Semester)
Candidate are required to give their answer in their own words as far as
practicable.
Attempt all the questions.
1. 1
a) While aligning a road in built up area with mixed traffic, it was necessary 8
to provide a horizontal curve of minimum radius 320m. Design the fol-
lowing geometric features assuming the following given data or else
suitable. Design speed is 65kmph, length of wheel base is 6.1m, Pave-
ment width is 10.5m
1. Super elevation
2. Extra widening
3. Transition curve
b) What is the penetration grade in bitumen, and how is it measured? 7

2 a) A 2% gradient meets a -0.25% gradient at a chainage of 1+105m and at 8

the reduced level of 76.55m. if the sight distance be 304.8m determine
the length of the vertical curve and the reduced level of the tangent points
and the highest point on the curve. Assume that the eye level of the
driver eye is 1.2m and the height of the obstruction is 0.15m.

b) What is sustainable development in transportation? Write down the strat-

egies for achieving sustainable transportation. 7
