Getting work experience

young people in the UK can solve this problem.
An apprenticeship
In the UK, an apprenticeship is a paid, full-time position between one and five years in length. 1 __________
Apprenticeships can be done in many different industries, but apprentices will have to be at least sixteen years
old and no longer in full-time education. Apprentices spend at least 20% of their time training for the role.
2 __________
A part-time job
In most cases, a part-time job is better paid per hour than an apprenticeship. 3 __________ Although young
people probably won’t work in the area they are thinking about specialising in, they will learn some valuable
soft skills, such as critical thinking and time management. 4 __________ Working as a waiter in a restaurant,
for instance, you will develop many such abilities including verbal communication, problem-solving and maths.
Unpaid work
To some, this may look like the worst option of the three, but there are many benefits. 5 __________ They will
get valuable experience, their CV will look better, they will make contacts in the industry and, if they impress
the boss, they may be offered a full-time position upon finishing their studies.

A However, it may only be for a few hours a week.

B Although the pay is low, they may get a job when they finish if they work hard.
C These are personal qualities and abilities that you need to succeed in many jobs, and employers often ask
for them.
D On the other hand, the pay is usually low and the work is often repetitive and boring.
E For example, if a young person wants to work in social media, they could try offering their services to a local
company.
F It allows people to be trained in skills relating to a particular area of work.
