(i) Name the gas collected at the cathode and anode respectively.
(ii) Why is the volume of one gas collected at one electrode double
that at the other? Name this gas.
(iii)How will you test the evolved gases?
6 Describe an activity to show a decomposition reaction in which light
is used to decompose a reactant.
Write chemical equation of the reaction and state its one use.
7 State reasons for the following:
(a) Iron articles get coated with a reddish-brown powder when left for
some time in open.
(b) Burning of coal is an exothermic reaction.
(c) The chemical equations should be balanced.
8 When potassium iodide solution is added to a solution of lead (II)
nitrate in a test tube, a precipitate is formed.
(i) State the colour of this precipitate.
(ii) Name the compound precipitated.
(iii)Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction.
9 What is meant by a precipitation reaction? Explain by giving an
example. Also give balanced chemical equation for the reaction stating
the states of the reactions and the products formed.
10 Identify the type of each of the following reactions:
(a) A reaction in which a single product is formed from two or more
reactants.
(b) The reaction mixture becomes warm.
(c) An insoluble substance is formed.
External surface of the container in which reaction takes place
becomes freezing cold.
11 Look at the figure given below and answer the following questions:

(i) Out of the two test tubes A and B state the tube that contains
hydrogen gas.
(ii) If the volume of hydrogen gas collected is 10 mL, what will be the
volume of oxygen collected?
(iii)State the purpose of adding a few drops of dil. sulphuric acid to
the water in plastic mug.
12 A brown substance ‘X’ on heating in air forms a substance ‘Y’.
When hydrogen gas is passed over heated ‘Y’, it again changes
back into ‘X’.
(i) Name the substance ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
(ii) Name the chemical processes occurring during both the changes.
(iii)Write the chemical equations involved in both the changes.
ANSWERS
1 i) The reddish brown coloured metal used in electric wires is
Copper.
When copper is heated strongly in air, it combines with
oxygen to form Copper (II) oxide, a black oxide.

ii)
2 (i) Yes, tempetature rises as the beaker gets hot. This is because
large amount of heat is released, or the reaction is
exothermic.
(ii) Combination reaction- Reaction in which a single product is
obtained from two or more reactants.
(iii) CaO+H2O → Ca(OH)2+heat
CaO-Quick lime
Ca(OH)2 -Slaked lime
3 i. Yes all decomposition reactions are endothermic. Decomposition
reactions involve breaking of bonds which require energy. Due to
this decomposition reactions are generally endothermic in
nature.
ii. The colour of copper sulphate when an iron nail is kept in it
changes from blue to pale green because iron is more reactive
than copper thus displacing copper from the solution resulting in
colour change
iii. During respiration, Carbohydrates present in food are broken
down to form glucose. Glucose combines with oxygen in the cells
of our body and provides energy. Therefore, respiration is an
exothermic reaction.
4 A) Brown colour fumes of nitrogen dioxide is formed. The residue
left is yellow color lead oxide.
B) The type of chemical reaction is Thermo lytic decomposition
reaction.

5 (i) At Cathode: hydrogen gas (H2)

At Anode: oxygen gas (O2)
(ii) 2H2O + Electric current → 2H2+O2
Since 2 moles of H2 combine with 1 mol of O2 to form H2O, so
the volume of H2, liberated is double that of O2.
Or In a molecule of water , Hydrogen and oxygen is always
present in the ration of 2 :1, hence the volume of hydrogen is
double the volume of oxygen.
(iii) When a burning splinter is brought near the mouth of the
liberated gases, the burning splinter extinguishes near the H 2
gas while the burning splinter keeps burning more near the
O2 gas.

6 We can show the decomposition reaction in which light is used to

decompose a reactant by the following activity:

• Take about 2gm silver chloride on a china dish.

• Place the China dish in front of sunlight for some time.
• After some time we will observe the colour change of the silver
chloride sample.
• White silver chloride turns into grey in the presence of sunlight due to
the formation of silver as a result of photolytic decomposition reaction.

The balanced chemical equation for the above reaction is as follows:

2AgCl---------sunlight-----2Ag + Cl2

Use: This is used in black and white photography.

7 a) Iron articles are shiny when new, but get coated with a reddish-
brown powder when left for some time. This process is called
as rusting of iron. The reddish brown powder is known as rust and it
is formed when a metal is attacked by substances around it such as
moisture, acids, etc.
b) Combustion reaction of coal is an exothermic reaction as heat is evolved in
the reaction. In this reaction, carbon reacts with oxygen to give carbon
dioxide and heat. Reactions in which heat is released along with the
formation of products are called exothermic chemical reactions.

c) A chemical equation should always be balanced because the law of

conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor
destroyed so in a chemical equation the total mass of reactants must
be equal to the mass of products formed i.e. the total number of atoms
of each element should be equal on both the sides of a chemical
equation.
8 i) Lead iodide is yellow colour precipitate.
ii) Compound name is Lead Iodide – PbI
iii) 2KI(aq) + Pb(NO 3)2(aq) --------- 2 PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)
9 On mixing the clear solution of two ionic compounds, as a substance
which is insoluble in water, is formed. This insoluble substance is known
as a formed is called precipitation reaction. Example: When sodium
sulphate solution is mixed with barium chloride solution, a white
precipitate of a substance (BaSO4) is formed.
Na2SO4(aq) +BaCl2(aq) → BaSO4↓ +2NaCl(aq)
10 a) Combination reaction
b) Exothermic /combustion reaction
c) Precipitation reaction.
d) Endothermic reaction.
11 i) Test tube B contains hydrogen gas.
ii) Volume of oxygen gas is always half the volume of hydrogen gas,
hence the volume of oxygen gas is 5ml.
iii) To carry out electrolysis in water,a few drops of sulphuric acid is
added to the water. It is because pure water is a bad conductor of
electricity. So it would not conduct electricity.
12 i)The brown substance ′X′ is copper that is Cu.
when heated copper oxide is formed.
Hence compound ′Y′ is copper oxide.
2Cu+O2→2CuO2
ii)It is a combination reaction.
If hydrogen gas is passed over heated copper (2CuO), the black coating
on the surface turns brown as the reverse reaction takes place and
copper is obtained.
The chemical reaction is as follows
CuO+H2→Cu+H2O
Reactions taking place here are oxidation and reduction. Also known as
redox reaction.
iii) 2Cu+O2→2CuO2 (Oxidation/Combination reaction
2CuO+H2→Cu+H20 (Redox reaction)
