GRADE 11 RESEARCH TASK

2024

This RESEARCH TASK consists of 11 pages.

2

1. Tips for conducting a research

Before you start writing your research assignment

• Analyse the key question and make sure that you fully understand what is
being asked and any historical terms which are used in the question.
• Identify possible sources of information which will help answer the key
question. These could be found in your school, online or in the community.
• Start to read and gather information about the key question.

During the research process

• Ensure that you have a plan so that your time is used effectively to meet
deadlines
• At all times keep the key question in mind. Keep asking yourself whether
the information you are gathering is relevant to the question.

2. Guidelines for research

Step 1: Formulate the hypothesis/ problem statement

• Learners must formulate their own hypothesis based on the problem they have
identified

Step 2: Background information

• Learners must explain the historical context of the question

• Learners must give enough background information to help the reader
understand why the key question you are answering is relevant and significant.

Step 3: Mapping

• Learners must provide a map of the area in the question

• During this stage a learner must create a buffer zone around the area where
the problem exists
• If the map used covers a wider area, buffer zones around the area of study
should be created
• The map should have a clear legend/ key and must be drawn to scale. The
scale must be indicated on the map.
3

Step 4: Methods of data collection

(a) PRIMARY DATA SOURCES

• The use of questionnaires
• Interviews
• Observations
• Field trips
(a) SECONDARY DATA SOURCES
• Newspaper article
• Government department statistics
• Books
• Internet

Step 5: Analysis of data

• Learners must use collected data now to formulate a discussion around the
existing problem.
• At this stage learners should represent some of the information graphically
where necessary, for example graphs and sketches.
• Learners must analyse graphic information during this stage.

Step 6: Recommendations and possible solutions

• Learners should now make recommendations to solve the problem in question

• Learners should present their original and realistic opinions

Step 7: Conclusion- accept or reject the hypothesis

• Learners should now take a decision to either ACCEPT or REJECT the

hypothesis
• Learners must give reasons for either ACCEPTING or REJECTING the
hypothesis.

Step 8: Bibliography

• Learners must include a comprehensive bibliography

• Learners must list websites in full
• Learners must include annexures of questionnaires and interviews conducted

RESEARCH TOPIC: THE IMPACT OF MASS MOVEMENT ON SETTLEMENTS IN

SOUTH AFRICA.

Mass movement is the movement of rock or soil downslopes under the force of
gravity. It differs from other processes such as erosion in that the debris
transported by mass movement is not entrained in a moving medium, such as
water, wind and ice. Mass movement can have disastrous consequences, both
immediate and delayed on the environment, infrastructure and humans.
6

Compile your research by completing the following activities outlined below.

Step 1: Formulate the hypothesis

• Formulate your own hypothesis based on a problem you have identified.

Step 2: Mapping

• Provide a map showing the area you are going to conduct your research on
• The scale should be indication on the map

Step 3: Background information

• Provide a brief introduction and description of Mass movement.

• Write down the examples of Mass movement
• Historical background
• Other relevant statistical information

Step 4: Data collection

Collect data using at least THREE methods e.g.

• Questionnaires
• Interviews
• Field trips
• Internet
• Literature research (newspapers, magazines, books etc.)
• Photographs and maps

Step 5: Analysis of data

• Analyse the data that you have collected, and formulate a report on your finding.
Support your finding with graphs, photos, etc.
• Using the above sets of data collected determine the extent to which Mass
movement affect settlements ( humans, infrastructure and the environment) in
South Africa
• Briefly discuss how Mass movement impact the settlements of South Africa
7

Step 6: Recommendations and solutions

• Provide suitable recommendations and solutions to the problem

• In your opinion as a researcher what would be the possible management
strategies of Mass movement on South African settlements
• Make a long term recommendation to the government department(s) on the
strategies to minimize the effects of Mass movement

Step 7: Conclusion- ACCEPT or REJECT the hypothesis

• Based on your findings in activity 5 you may either ACCEPT or REJECT the
hypothesis.
• Provide a reason for your conclusion.

Step 8: Bibliography

• Provide a bibliography for your research. If you have done any internet
research, you must provide the websites that you have used in full.

Step 9: Submission

• Collate all your information

• Include a table of content
• Ensure that you include a copy of the questionnaire and/or question asked in
your interviews
• Design a suitable cover page
• Submit your research
