OPERATIONS ON MATRICES

(1) ADDITION AND SUBSTRACTION OF MATRICES : 2 matrices A and B can

be added or subtracted if they are of the same order by adding or
subtracting corresponding elements of the given matrices.
1 2 3 8 −2 5
eg : (i) A = , 𝐵= then
4 5 6 1 3 4
9 0 8 −7 4 −2
A+B = , A–B =
5 8 10 3 2 2
2 3 1 2 3
(ii) If A = , 𝐵= then A +B and A – B is not
1 0 1 0 1
defined as A and B are not of the same order.

PROPERTIES OF MATRIX ADDITION

If A = 𝑎 , 𝐵 = 𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = 𝑐 are matrices of the same order

than
(i) Commutative law : A + B = B +A
(ii) Associative law : ( A + B) + c = A + ( B + C )
(iii) Existence of additive Identity : If A = [𝑎 ] is a matrix of order mxn
and o is an mxn zero matrix, then A+0 = 0+A =A, then matrix O is
the additive identity for matrix addition.
(iv) Existence of additive Inverse : Let A = 𝑎 be any matrix, then we
have another matrix as -A = −𝑎 such that
A +( -A) = ( -A) +A = 0 . So - A is the additive inverse of A or
negative of A.

SCALAR MULTIPLICATION OF A MATRIX

If A = 𝑎 and B = 𝑏 are two matrices of same order say mxn
and ‘k’ and ‘ l’ are scalars , then
(I) k( A + B) = k A + k B
(II) ( k + l ) A = k A + l A
