Unit 2 Test SPH3U Forces Ver A
2. The diagram to the right shows an 8 kg object that is moving at a constant velocity of 2.5 𝑚/𝑠 as a result of
an applied force of 55 N. (Note: the FBD is incomplete)
a) find the force of gravity acting on the object. [1 mark]
b) What is the coefficient of kinetic friction that the object is experiencing? [2 marks]
3. What force is needed to accelerate a 2.0 kg block of wood at a rate of 4.0 𝑚/𝑠 2 [𝐸] along a rough table
against an average 10.0 N force of friction? [2 marks]
4. A bullet with a mass of 0.20 kg is fired from a gun that has a mass of 6.0 kg. The bullet leaves the gun with a
velocity of 5.0 x 102 m/s [forward] having accelerated for 0.15 seconds.
a) Calculate the force on the bullet. [3 marks]
b) Find the recoil velocity of the gun after 0.15 seconds. [3 marks] Hint: Newton’s 3rd Law
5. Two sleds are being pulled by a rope and are accelerated by a force of 120 N [E].
Sled 1 (30.0 kg) experiences a force of friction of 20 N and sled 2 (25.0 kg) experiences a force of friction of 15 N.
a) Determine the acceleration of the sleds. [2 marks]
7. If 𝑚 = 5.0 𝑘𝑔 and 𝑀 = 8.0 𝑘𝑔, find the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the rope. [5 marks]
8. If in the following diagram, 𝑚1 = 3.0 𝑘𝑔 and 𝑚2 = 5.0 𝑘𝑔 and find the acceleration of the masses and the
tension in the string. Assume there is force of friction on 𝑚1 of 10 N and the string has no mass. [6 marks]
b) How far will mass 𝑚1 move in 1.5 seconds if the mass was initially pushed at 0.4 𝑚/𝑠 [𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡]?
[3 marks]
