DETAILED LESSON PLAN

MATHEMATICS 6

I. Objectives
At the end of 60 minutes period the grade six pupils should
be able to:
a. Solve word problems involving addition of similar fractions;
b. Add similar fractions accurately; and
c. Enumerates the steps in adding similar fractions.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Addition of Similar fractions
b. Reference: Mathematic in Everyday life page 20
c. Materials: charts, number problem written in the eggs, 1
box.

Value: Being cooperative, patience in solving word problems.

III. Learning Activities

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPILS’ ACTIVITY
1. Prayer
Let us all stand and pray. (pray)

1. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning sir, good morning
classmates.
2. Song
Before we start our lesson, let us (One and one two, … )
sing a song give the tune, Kenjie.

3. Drill
I have here a box with egg. In
the eggs are questions or number
problems were written. While
singing, you will pass this box
around. If I said stop, you will stop
singing. The person holding the box
will pick one egg and answer the
question or problem written in the
egg.
Are you ready class? Yes, we are!

(teacher will tell the pupils to sing..) (Pupils will sing and pass the toy
around)

Here are the questions/ problems

written in the eggs.

1. Lowest term of 2/4 ½

2. LCM of 2, 4, 8 8
3. 3 x 4 = _______ 12
4. 12 x 3 =______ 36
5. Lowest term of 4/6 2/3
6. Lowest term of 6/9 ½
7. 5 x 6 = ________ 30
8. 10+15 =_______ 25
9. 20-9 = ________ 11
10. Lowest term of 5/15 1/3

B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation

What can you see in the picture?

Yes, Vincent?
Children running
Very Good! What else Annalyn?
Girl sitting on a fence.
Right! What else? Windmills.
Did you notice this man jogging? Yes, we did.

This is Mario. Everyday he jogs at

the park. Let us help him to solve
his problem.

2. Presentation/Discussion

Mario jogs regularly. He jogged

1/6 kilometers then he saw a friend, he
jogged another 2/6 kilometers. Then he
stopped for a while. How many
kilometers had he jogged?

What is asked in the problem? (Kilometers Jose jogged.)

What are the given facts? (1/6 and 2/6 km.)

What operation is needed to solve the Addition

problem?

What is the number sentence? 1/6 + 2/6 = N

Very good! Now we will solve for the

value of N.

In adding similar fractions, we have these

steps to be followed.

1. Add the numerators

1/6 + 2/6 = 3/

2. Copy the same denominator.

1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6

3. Reduce the sum to lowest term

whenever possible.
1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6 or ½

Going back to our problem, what is the

answer?
Mario jogged ½ kilometers.
Another problem.

Juan is Mario’s friend. He also

jogged regularly. Juan jogged 1/8
kilometers. He saw a friend and jogged
another 3/8 kilometers. How many
kilometers did he jogged?

What is asked, Jewel?

Kilometers Juan jogged.
What are the given facts, Nick Russel?
1/8 km and 3/8 km
What operation is needed to solve the
problem, Andrea? Addition

What is the number sentence, Athena

Star? 1/8 + 3/8 = N

What is the first step Jeschil?

Add the numerators.
What are the numerators?
1 added by 3 is 4
What is the second step, Shine?
Copy the same denominator.
What is the denominator?
8
What is the answer, Jeneza?
4/8 kilometers.
Is this the final answer, Jamil?
No, we need to find the lowest
term.
Very good! So, what is the final answer?
Practice Exercise/Fixing Skills ½ kilometer.

I need 5 volunteers to answer the

number problem on the board.

2/4 + ¾ = _______

5/6 + 1/6 = _______

4/7 + 2/7 = _______

5/10 + 9/10 = ______

7/9 + 5/9 = ________

3. Generalization
Based on the discussion, how do we
add similar fractions? In adding similar fractions, we
add the numerators, copy the same
denominators then reduce the sum
4. Application to lowest terms if possible.
(easy)
Group 1: Add the following:

1. 5/6 + 2/6 = ________

2. 2/4 + 3/4 = ________ 7/6
3. 3/5 + 2/5 = ________ 5/4
4. 6/8 + 1/8 = ________ 5/5 or 1
5. 5/7 + 1/7 = ________ 7/8
6/7
(average)
Group 2 : Read and add the following

1. What is the sum of 5/6 and 3/6?

2. Add 4/8 and 2/8. 8/6
3. What is 2/5 + 1/5 ? 6/8 or ¾
4. When 3/9 is added to 5/9, the sum 3/5
is? ______ 8/9
5. What is 3/8 plus 2/8?
5/8
(Hard)
Group 3: Read and answer the word
problem. Show your solution.

Emily walks 5/8 of a kilometer

to school and George walks 3/8 5/8 + 3/8 = 18/8 or 1 kilometers
kilometers to school. How far do far they walked altogether.
they walk altogether?
