Section-E
37 Different crops require different climatic conditions, temperature and photoperiods for their 4
growth and completion of their life cycle. Photoperiods are related to the duration of
sunlight. Growth of plants and flowering are dependent on sunlight. As we all know, plants
manufacture their food in sunlight by the process of photosynthesis. There are some crops,
which are grown in rainy season, called the kharif season from the month of June to October,
and some of the crops are grown in the winter season, called the Rabi season from
November to April. Paddy, soyabean, pigeon pea, maize, cotton, green gram and black gram
are kharif crops, whereas wheat, gram, peas, mustard, linseed are Rabi crops.
a) What are kharif crops? Give examples
b) If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen? Discuss.
c) Despite favourable climatic conditions, a farmer’s crop failed to give a good
yield. Give the possible reasons for this.
38 The discovery of atmospheric pressure gives a fact that air has weight. The weight of the 4
atmosphere presses down on the earth’s surface and creates pressure on it. The pressure
at any point exerted by the weight of the air above is called atmospheric pressure.
The atmospheric pressure on the earth’s surface at sea level is one hundred thousand
pascals i.e., 100 KPa. The atmospheric pressure at a place decrease with an increase in
altitude. The atmospheric pressure at a place is the force exerted by the weight of the air
column above that place. As we go up the length of the air column above us decreases.
This means that its weight and the atmospheric pressure are smaller at higher places than
at sea level. If the pressure of the atmosphere is removed suddenly, our blood vessels and
tissues will rupture due to the pressure of the blood and other fluids inside. Thus, the
spacemen also wear special pressurized suits as in space there is no air and hence, no air
pressure. At the top of a mountain, some people can feel their ears “popping” due to a
decrease in air pressure. The ears pop to balance the difference in pressure inside and
outside the body.
a) Name the instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure.
b) Define drag.
c) We know that there is a huge amount of atmospheric pressure on us. But we do
not experience its effect. Why?
39 People see an object either because it gives off light or because the object reflects, or 4
bounces back, light. For example, people see the Sun because it gives off its own light.
But people see the Moon only because it reflects light from the Sun.
When only the surface of an object (such as the Moon) can be seen, the object is said to
be opaque. Opaque objects do not let light pass through them. Instead they reflect and
absorb light. As a result, they are not see-through. For example, a mirror is an opaque
object that reflects almost all of the light that hits it. Most other opaque objects reflect
and absorb some light. Objects made of wood or steel are opaque.
i) How do people can see the different objects around them?
ii) What are opaque objects?
iii) Write the characteristics of an image formed on a mirror?
iv) What happens to light when it gets dispersed? Give an example.
