CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Social media has become the world’s largest community that already being
integral part of student’s social interaction, especially for students that used a mobile
device. Turns out social media is the device that accompany almost every student’s
activity in school for learning equipment, and requirement for teacher and student that
involves online teaching material. Students in SMA Plus Negeri 17 Palembang has
been holding the device for learning equipment and each students feels that social
media must be a necessary part that influence the quality of understanding of each
students with respect to the material provided by teacher.
Students are often experienced the difficully of learning the material given by
teachers, that dificully arises from students because the concepts was too
sophisticated and unrelated to the previous lessons. Because of that, students feel
unengaged to learn the concept and finding that social media is great introduction to
begin studying the material that was unclear and not justified from the school lessons.
Students find better visual such as social media posts could help students approach
the material. The largest video post community such as “Youtube” is one of social
media that most students finding the posts uploaded was interactive in order to
explain the simplest form of concepts and material.
Mathematics almost become total fear for students to memories the concept.
Sometimes the concepts was beyond the understanding and the assessment often the
most hardest to achieve higher score. From that situation, students open “Youtube” to
watch lessons which fits the preference. The lessons such as from mathematical
topics perhaps the favorite searching for students, especially the first chapter that 11 th
grade must accomplished which is about circle theorems.
Most of students are not completed the material with entire understanding because
of unreachable concepts and not ready to accept mathematical learning. Learning in
social media expecially “Youtube” perhaps favourable method for students to learn
mathematics, but each students have different level of understanding, and students

mastery for circle theorems during those active learning could be in different
threshold, under the influence of social media learning strategy.
Therefore , author interested to begin the research entitled “ The Influence Of
Social Media To Increase The Student Understanding Of Circle Topic In
Mathematics”.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Influence
According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (2005: 849), influence is power
that exists or arises from something (person or object) that helps shape character,
a person's beliefs or actions. So from this opinion you can
It can be concluded that influence is a power or strength that arises
from something, be it people or objects and everything that exists in nature
so it affects everything around it.
According to Surakhmad (2012: 1), influence is the power that arises from
an object or person and also internal symptoms that can bring about change
that can shape beliefs or change so that influence is a force or force that can
arising from something, be it character, person, thing, belief and action
someone who can influence the environment around them.

The first function of social media is of course communication. Before it
developed like this, social media initially only focused on building a good
communication ecosystem for users. However, along with the development of the
internet and technology, social media is more than just communication, social media
has become a second world for people in all parts of the world to gather and interact.
Social media has succeeded in building communication without time and geographic
limitations.
2. Marketing
The second function of social media is to carry out marketing. As a platform
that is almost always used by humans, now social media has succeeded in creating
services that make it easier for business people to introduce and reach more
consumers. This method has proven effective in increasing profits and making it
easier for users to get their needs.
3. Learning media
The third function, social media is also often needed for teaching and learning
needs, because social media can help facilitate the teaching and learning process with
technology such as sending and collecting assignments, providing teaching materials
in the form of videos that can be distributed via social media to make them easier to
reach.
2.2.2 Benefits of social media
1. Learning, Listening and Conveying Tools
2. Documentation, Administration and Integration Facilities
3. Planning, Strategy and Management Tools

• The central angle = 2 times the circumferential angle facing the same arc.
LBOC = 2 x LBDC.
• The circumferential angle = ≥ times the central angle facing the same arc.
BDC =ラ✕BOC.
The measure of each circumferential angle facing the diameter of the circle is
90°.
The angles of a circumference facing the same arc are equal.
The chord quadrilateral ABCD is a chord quadrangle with
AB, BC, CD, and AD are chords.
Quadrilateral properties of chords:
LA + LC = 180° and ZB + LD = 180°.
2.4 Mathematics
Mathematics is learning which difficult for every student because it is based
on numbers which of course consists of many formulas, mathematics is learning that
solves problems by using arithmetic. In general, the notion of mathematics is a
science that is obtained by reasoning using terms that are carefully, clearly, and
accurately defined and represented by symbols or that have meaning and can be used
in solving problems relate to numbers.
According to Susilo (2012:22) Pronounced Mathematics is just a collection of
numbers, symbols, and formulas that have nothing to do with the real world. Instead,
mathematics grows and roots from the real world.
According to Sundayana (2016:2) Mathematics is one of the fields of study
that supports the development of science and technology.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
2. Social Media
Social media is a digital platform that facilitates users to interact with each other or
share content in the form of photos, videos such as learning material like a Youtube,
3. Circle Theorems
It is the theorems that describes the circle and includes the material from the chapter
of grade XI mathematics textbook recently learned in SMA Plus
Negeri 17 Palembang.
4. Mathematics
Mathematics is a lesson related to circle material, mathematics has a lot of material,
in this research we will discuss about circle theorems

3.2.2 Sample
Sample are the small part of the population in this research, writer will use
purposive sample purposive sample is. The sample taken in this research were XI.4
students as many 35 students of XI.4 sample of the study will be divided into two
groups, first one is the experimental group, which designed to watch some of the
social media posts explaining about circle theorems, the other one is the control
group, which represents the amount of students that did not watch the videos and will
be assigned with the test paper directly.

Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can
be used to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and
generalize results to wider populations, The result of this study will be an explanation
of the answer to each sample. By using quantitative methods, you can find how The
Influence Of Social Media To Increase The Student Understanding Of Circle
Theorems

The sample will answer 4 questions that have been created to test the
influence of social media (YouTube) and compare respondents who watched the
video first and then answered the questions with those who answered the questions
immediately without watching the video
And with the results of the test scores for each sample, you will be able to
conclude the difference in scores which will show how much influence YouTube
social media can help students understand in studying circle theorems.
