01 – UNIT TEST 1
Interviewer Following our discussion about teenage fashion, we have asked the fashion
blogger Angie Watson about the importance of creating one’s own unique style. Angie, what
is your opinion on the matter?
Angie For me, the basic rule is to wear clothes that make you feel comfortable, but your style
depends on your personality and on the people you hang out with.
Interviewer The people you hang out with?
Angie Yeah. Many teenagers simply don’t want to look different, and, as a consequence,
they will choose the safest option, usually jeans and a T-shirt. This may not be particularly
special, but it’s nothing to make fun of. Other teenagers, however, want to feel that they
belong to a group of people who’ve got similar interests. Their clothes often show the
subculture that they are a part of, or reflect the musical tastes they have. But, there’s
something more important than style. If I see somebody wearing scruffy clothes, or with
dirty fingernails or greasy hair, I have to ask myself: what kind of style is that? A lot of young
people try to look original, but they often forget about the importance of personal hygiene.
However you look, that’s one of the basic things you should really care about.
Interviewer What about your own style?
Angie Well, I’ve always looked up to people who aren’t afraid to express themselves by
changing their appearance. I also want my clothes to reflect who I am. You’ve got to make a
real effort to find your own unique style. I spend a lot of time shopping around, but the
result is usually worth it. I often visit second-hand shops to find cheap designer clothes. I also
like young, talented designers. I’ll buy their products to help promote a new brand and boost
the local economy.

02 – UNIT TEST 2
1
Alicia Robert, hi! Well, tell me! How was your interview?
Robert Pretty bad, actually.
Alicia Why? What went wrong? Maybe you didn’t prepare enough for it?
Robert Quite the opposite! I read a lot about the company and thought about some
questions I expected them to ask me. But instead of anything like that, they just
gathered all the candidates together in one room and gave us some strange

tests. A nasty surprise! I think I’d better start looking for some other job offers.
2
Man All right, it seems we’re through with the better part of our meeting and I bet
everybody’s looking forward to the coffee break we have scheduled for 11
o’clock. So, let’s take a break now and meet back here in, say, quarter of an
hour? Yes, Natalie? Ah, sorry, I forgot. Natalie needs to copy some materials
for the next part of our meeting, so let’s make it a bit longer, half an hour,
perhaps? But don’t take any longer, please. We’ll have to finish before 1 p.m.
and we still have like an hour to go, so let’s get back at 11.30, that’s okay, isn’t
it?
3
Alicia Peter, how are you getting on in your job?
Peter Well, I’ve only been working there for about three weeks, so it’s a bit early to
say. I know I won’t make a fortune as a new member of staff, so I really can’t
complain about the money. The people are a bit of a problem, though. They
don’t seem very friendly and there’s a lot of tension in the office. Sometimes, I
have to work long hours and I’m really tired when I leave the office, not so
much because of the work, but more because of the unpleasant working
environment.
4
Are you finding it difficult to cope with your finances while doing a degree at university?
Would you like to increase your budget by adding some extra income while studying? If so,
why not join us at ‘Jobs Unlimited’? We will certainly find you some employment to fit in
with your schedule, and match your qualifications and interests. All you need to do is go to
our website at www. jobs_unlimited.com and fill in the application form.
5
Liz Matt, what do you think of your job?
Matt Well, it has been pretty boring so far, actually. I’ve only been doing some easy
work on a few engineering projects for my company. The thing is that I really
feel I should be involved in some more interesting projects.
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Liz Would you rather start your own business?

Matt No, I don’t think so. I’d need much more experience for that. No, it’s much too
early to be thinking about that. Besides, I like the feeling of stability you get
while working for a well-known company.

03 – UNIT TEST 3
Two weeks ago, my husband and I went to Scotland for an activity holiday. We flew to
Glasgow but needed a quick transfer bus to the railway station because we wanted to take a
train to the north of the country on the same day. We ended up getting a taxi, but
unfortunately, the driver dropped us off at the wrong side of the station, and despite
running all the way to the ticket office to buy the tickets, we missed the train and had to
wait nearly 5 hours for the next one, sitting in a café at the station.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, we had problems with our accommodation once we’d arrived
in the mountains. We’d booked a hotel online in advance. However, when we turned up,
feeling terribly tired and hungry, the receptionist couldn’t find our reservation. It turned out
that somehow, probably due to a system error, although we had booking for that hotel
chain, it was at a completely different location! To make things worse, that particular hotel
didn’t have any vacancies due to the skiing season. So we spent the whole night in the hotel
lobby and returned home the next day. We only got our money back two days ago, but the
whole experience was a disaster from start to finish!

04 – UNIT TEST 4

… and whether we like it or not, genetically modified food is here to stay. Despite the
opinions of those who worry about genetic pollution or possible health problems, GM food
is the most sensible solution to feeding the growing human population in the future. It is
much cheaper to produce and besides, the genetic modification of some plants makes it
possible to grow them in areas with difficult farming conditions, like some countries in
Africa.
2
Woman It’s a fascinating place, isn’t it? I loved the 3D films about the universe. Amazing
views. Pity we haven’t brought the kids with us.
Man No, it would be a bit too serious for them. I’m sure they’d rather visit Disneyworld or a
place like that. Anyway, for me, the most amazing part of the place so far has been the
historical exhibition. Just think about it, the equipment they used back in the 1960s while
preparing for landing on the Moon. Absolutely incredible. Anyway, what’s next?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Woman I think they’re taking us on a bus tour of the place. It’s a pity, though, that our
tickets don’t include visiting the inside of the Atlantis Shuttle. I’d love to see that.
3
I’m afraid I can’t give you more details about our current project. At our company, we have
all signed a special agreement not to reveal any essential information to the media about the
robots we’re designing at the moment. Anyway, although robots get a really bad press
sometimes through films or books presenting them as dark characters, the reality is that
they do jobs that we often describe as the ‘three Ds': dull, dirty or dangerous.
4
I only found it a few days ago and it’s the best one I’ve ever had. It’s got an intuitive graphic
interface, so you can easily enter different settings to protect your computer. The best thing
is that you can design your own firewall to browse the Internet safely. If you need any extra
tips about how to use it, you can find them on the company’s website.
5
I’m sorry Sally, but it’s really impossible to make this software work properly on your
computer. It’s got an old CPU and graphics card, and not enough memory. So, the program
will often crash or not run at all. If you really need to use it, I’m afraid you’ll need to buy a
new computer. But before you do that, I could lend you my laptop because I can use my PC
for a week or so.

05 – UNIT TEST 5
Interviewer Karen, do you think that people in Britain are eating more healthily now than in
the past?
Karen Yes, I think so. It’s now really easy to change your eating habits for the better because
of the huge amount of information about good and healthy food which is available
everywhere these days. For example, I became interested in healthy cooking a few years ago
when my friend recommended one of those food blogs to me. I also regularly buy some
cookery magazines which come with some great recipes.
Interviewer Oliver, do you think that people in Britain have good eating habits?
Oliver Well, not necessarily. I mean, a lot of people have very busy lifestyles so they are
becoming lazier when it comes to cooking. Just like me and my girlfriend! We hardly ever
have any time to cook a proper meal, so we just get some ready-made meals on the way
home from work or just order a takeaway in the evening. To cook a good dinner, it takes
time and money to get good quality ingredients, which we just don’t have.
Interviewer Zoe, what’s your opinion about the eating habits in Britain? Do you think that
more people are interested in eating and cooking good quality food?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Zoe Well, it’s difficult to say, really. On one hand, I think that cooking and eating good food is
now fashionable. Here, television is doing a good job by showing a lot of interesting cookery
programmes and cooking competitions. Yes, I’m a big fan of ‘Top Chef’ myself! But on the
other hand, life is very fast these days and most people want quick results when they, for
example, go on a diet to lose weight. So they follow some strange diets, which are not
healthy for them at all.

06 – UNIT TEST 6
Good morning, this is Evan Baxton with the 8 o’clock news. Last night, there was a burglary
at the town’s Creston Museum. According to a police statement, the burglary took place
between 2 and 4 a.m. The burglars got inside through an emergency door located on one
side of the building. The small privately owned museum, which exhibits items connected to
the world of baseball, can’t afford any on-site security guards, though it does has an alarm
system. Unfortunately, the burglars managed to switch this off before entering the
building. The museum owner has told us that, while most of the stolen items have little
financial value, they have great historical and sentimental value for fans of baseball.
Museum staff are still working on a complete list of the stolen items, but it is already clear
that the collection of bats signed by famous players are missing. is the 1974 National
Championship Cup, which is certainly the most valuable item to have gone missing. Its value
to a private collector may be as much as $25,000. The police, who are still questioning
museum staff, at the moment, hope that the items might appear for sale soon which may
lead to the arrest of the criminals.

07 – UNIT TEST 7
Presenter Good morning. Today, I have in the studio with me Anna Dozer who specialises in
the treatment of various sleep disorders and is going to talk to us about sleepwalking. Hello,
Anna.
Anna Good morning everybody. Thanks for inviting me on to the programme.
Presenter Anna, let’s start with some basic facts about sleepwalking, or somnambulism, as it
is formally referred to. So how common is this condition really?
Anna Well, research shows that sleepwalking incidents might concern up to 15% of the
general population. However, the condition is much more likely to occur in children,
especially those between the age of three and seven, as 20 to 25% of youngsters have
experienced at least one incident of sleepwalking. As some studies have revealed, most
people grow out of this problem, with only about 4% of adults reporting regular incidents of
sleepwalking.
Presenter So, why are children more at risk from sleepwalking?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Anna Well, while some psychiatrists might say that sleepwalking is nothing out of the
ordinary in most children, as they often just get out of bed and walk to their parents’
bedroom, our studies have shown that bad dreams, or ‘night terrors’ as we call them, are
among the most common causes of this behaviour. This is unlike adults, who usually suffer
from sleepwalking as a result of getting too little sleep or taking some pills.
Presenter Right, I see. What exactly happens to a person who is sleepwalking?
Anna Well, we have to understand that sleepwalking incidents might often involve complex
forms of behaviour, especially in adults. For example, it’s not uncommon for a sleepwalker
to go into the kitchen and start cooking, or go into the bathroom for a bath or shower. In
rare cases, sleepwalkers might even leave the house, get in the car and find themselves
miles away when they eventually wake up. In contrast, speaking or shouting out loud are
commonly viewed and reported as sleepwalking behaviour.
Presenter Oh, dear. Some of these things sound quite dangerous.
Anna Exactly. And while it’s a common misconception that we should never wake a
sleepwalking person, it might actually be quite dangerous not to do so. However, we need to
remember that the act of suddenly waking up might make the sleepwalker utterly confused
and he or she might even attack the person who has broken his or her sleep. So, it's better to
wake people up gently than to pour cold water over their head!
Presenter Yeah, I wouldn’t risk that! OK, we’ll take a short commercial break now and after a
few moments we’ll be back to talk about some safety measures and therapies aimed at
helping people who suffer from sleepwalking disorders …

08 – UNIT TEST 8
1
Well, to begin with, it’s quite natural for young people to rebel against their parents on their
way to becoming fully independent. Money, however, often makes the latter process slow, if
not impossible for a relatively long period of time. A study conducted by ‘Junior
Achievement’, a group that educates children about money and jobs, has revealed that at
least a quarter of the young generation today don’t expect to achieve financial
independence until their mid-20s. Surprisingly, a high proportion of these same teenagers
are convinced that they’ll be much better-off financially when they reach their parents’ age.
2
Unfortunately, this optimism might be rather unfounded. A lot of young people don’t realise
how much money they actually cost their parents, and admit to having little knowledge of
daily problems related to money. So, their first step towards financial independence will be
to learn how to go about managing their personal finances. And here I’d like to say that it is
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

the parents who ought to be accountable for NOT teaching their children the basics of
budgeting, account management and investing in things.
3
This educational process should start with an honest talk about money issues. As a follow-
up, teens should learn to manage their pocket money, balance their monthly budget by
doing some extra work, and learn to cut costs by giving up some of their spending habits
which should help them to learn to save.
4
Cost management and saving issues are extremely important as a lot of teenagers go to
university after they leave school and college, and this usually means encountering huge
expenses. If they do not want to get themselves seriously into debt, which would mean
being forced to go back to living in their bedroom at their parents’ house while paying their
debts back, they’ll need to start saving for university beforehand and to keep to a well-
planned budget during their studies.

Tom Hi Nadia, what’s that you’re writing?
Nadia Hi, Tom. It’s the essay for our French class. You know, the one about a person who’s a
role model for us. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about it again?
Tom No, not this time! I’ve already done the first draft, but I still need to polish it a bit. Who
are you writing about?
Nadia My grandma. The one we used to live with when I was little. As my parents were both
out at work, she was the one who really brought me up, but when I was seven, we moved to
another city because of my dad’s job.
Tom But what are you going to write about her? I mean, you can’t remember much from
your early childhood, can you?
Nadia Well, you’d be surprised. I’ve got lots of clear memories of her teaching me to draw,
dance and do some simple household chores.
Tom I see! Don’t you wish you could keep in touch with her more?
Nadia But I do! She bought a laptop two years ago, and I showed her how to use an online
communicator, and we’ve been chatting almost daily since then. She’s the first person I turn
to for suggestions if I’m in trouble. What about you? Who’s your essay about?
Tom Hmm, an uncle?
Nadia An uncle? You mean your uncle?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Tom Well, to be honest, I couldn’t think of a family member other than my parents who has
influenced me that much, but they were kind of too obvious to write about, so I’ve made up
a relative. He’s an adventurous type, who’s travelled to really exotic places and been in lots
of dangerous situations.
Nadia Hmm, I think you’d be better off writing about a real person.

Our local football club, Watford United, has always played an important role in integrating
the local community and promoting an active lifestyle. Like every year, on the 1st of May,
the club will be holding its ‘Doors Open Day’ to allow members of the public to visit the club
premises, talk to our players and get autographs. We encourage all parents to talk to the
coaches at our Youth Football Academy. The highlight of the day will be a friendly match
between our current team and an all-star team, including some players who began their
careers here and went on to gain international fame. Admission is totally free, so don’t miss
out on all the fun.
2
Of course, I’ve always known that we have a football club, Watford United, but I had never
been much into football. So, you can imagine my surprise when my 10-year-old daughter old
me she wanted to join their football team for girls. Well, she did and now she regularly plays
some matches in the youngsters’ league. I’ve been to a few of these to watch Sandra play
and it has been really great fun! Because of this, I now watch football on TV and I’m finding it
quite exciting.
3
I used to play for Watford United’s junior and youth teams for almost 10 years. I joined their
Youth Football Academy at the age of seven and was one of their most promising young
players. Who knows how things would have worked out if I hadn’t had a serious leg injury
during a regular league game. Anyway, after serious surgery and a long recovery period, my
parents wouldn’t hear of me going back to the training sessions, and they persuaded me to
quit playing football altogether. I still love going to the stadium on match days, but now it’s
only as a spectator.
4
Here at Watford United, we are committed to encouraging parents from our town to bring
their children to us so that they can try out different sporting disciplines at our club where
we have all the training facilities. Besides our Youth Football Academy, we run a number of
other sporting training sessions including gymnastics, judo, volleyball and table tennis. For

1
Woman So, how did it go?
Man Oh, don’t ask. It was a disaster!
Woman Why?! Oh, let me guess. The projector wouldn’t work or the flash drive was broken.
These things always happen at the worst time.
Man Yes, they do, but not this time, actually. It seems that the organisers messed things up. I
was supposed to talk to people from outside the IT business about the basics of information
security. But a few minutes into my presentation, I saw that the people were outright bored
and some even started leaving the room. It turned out that I was actually addressing a group
of computer programmers. Pity really because I’d put so much effort into that talk.
2
I wasn’t exactly over the moon when my parents decided to send me to this expensive,
private boarding school. They told me it was a well-known school with a long tradition,
famous for the excellent academic results achieved by the students. So, I knew there’d be
strict rules to follow and I also expected to have to study more to keep up with the other
students. Well, what I hadn’t counted on was that there would be so many interesting things
to do after school hours! I’ve already joined a drama group and choir, and I’m also thinking
of going on some field trips as well.
3
Woman Lots of legroom, I like that. The seat’s almost as comfortable as my chair at home.
Man Yeah, that’s right. I guess you’ll be falling asleep as soon as we take off.
Woman Well, yes, I might. And what about you? Are you going to look through your
presentation again?
Man No, I’ve double checked that already. I think I’ll watch one of those in-flight movies.
Woman OK, wake me up when they start serving dinner.
4
A Are you going out now? Don’t you remember that Sarah and Mark are coming round
tonight?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

B Of course, I do. I just need to check some things with the car before we set off tomorrow
morning. But don’t worry. The bathroom looks great, I’ve already cleaned it. So, unless you
need my help with the cooking …
A No, I’m OK with that, but you could do something about the mess in the living room. You
could start by tidying up all those books and magazines, for example.
B Oh, all right. I guess I can go to the garage later.

5
Most of the cases we deal with are domestic ones, you know, divorces and finding missing
people. And sometimes parents hire us to spy on their teenage children. Occasionally, we’re
hired by insurance companies to look into large insurance claims. Of course, we cannot get
in the way if police detectives are investigating the case as well, although we may carry out
our own investigation alongside theirs. Once we’ve collected enough evidence, it’s up to our
lient to decide whether to take the case to court.
6
Woman So, how are you feeling?
Man Well, it’s been almost a week since the operation and I was hoping to get back home in
a few days, but the doctors say I need to stay in here for at least another week.
Woman Why? Any complications after the surgery?
Man No, apparently it was successful. I still feel weak, but this is normal in the recovery
process. The problem is that they’re not happy with the results of my blood tests which may
indicate that something else is wrong with me. So, they’re going to keep me in here for
another week or two to do some additional testing.

Hello, my name is Mark Bryant and I’ve been asked to run a series of talks about cyber
security in your company. I’d like to begin by presenting the most important areas of cyber
security that I’m going to address during our course. Today, we’ll be analysing some typical
habits of staff when handling online information, which, unfortunately, more often than not
dramatically lowers the cyber security levels for a lot of companies. We’ll then go on to take
a closer look at different types of viruses, spyware and other malicious codes as well as solid
security practices for preventing important business data from leaking out…
2
Man So, what do you think of it? Did you find it interesting?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Woman Unfortunately, not. It took me ages to get through.

Man Really? I found it almost as engrossing as her earlier novels. OK, it might not be as
original as her other books and the reviews it has received seem to be, hmm, a bit over the
top in praise.
Woman To put it mildly, you mean! There’s no reason, in my opinion, whatsoever for the
book getting so much praise from the critics. Unlike the ones I’d read before, this one’s got
an uninspiring plot and one-dimensional characters. I feel she’s just feeding off the success
of her earlier books.
Man Actually, I can’t go along with that. You can still feel the brilliance of her style while
reading it.

… and now for some local news. The ring road on the eastern side of the city was blocked
this morning after a heavy tanker, carrying 35,000 litres of toxic chemicals, skidded and
toppled across the road. The police have found out that the lorry was going well over the 50-
mile-an-hour speed limit and, as the driver tried to swerve round a sharp bend in the road,
he lost control of the tanker. Emergency services arriving at the scene found the driver
unhurt, but firefighters had to take immediate action to neutralise the leak from the
damaged tanker. At the moment, traffic is being redirected to other roads and motorists are
advised to avoid entering the ring road in that part of the city.

A lot of people learn foreign languages, but actually not that many make it to the level of
being fluent in a foreign language. I personally believe that unless you have some innate gift
for learning a foreign language, such as a good memory or an ear for picking up the right
accent, you’ll never become advanced at a foreign language. I don’t possess this capacity
and it has been very frustrating and demotivating for me to see some of my friends learn to
speak French well with nowhere near as much effort as I’ve put into it.
2
A few years ago, I took a crash course in Spanish, you know, one of those very intensive
courses. The motivation for doing so came when I learned that my company wanted to send
me to their branch in Madrid. But actually, I didn’t pick up Spanish that well on the course. In
fact, it wasn’t until I worked in Madrid, being immersed in the language all day long, both at
work and in everyday social situations, that I was able to make some real progress. Without
this, I would have just been stuck at some kind of elementary level.
3
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

I started learning German as a teenager at secondary school, and then I continued studying it
while doing my degree in economics. But I’ve never got any better than intermediate level. I
think this is because I’ve never had any real incentive to put more effort into learning the
language. I think I would have made much more progress if the circumstances had somehow
forced me to study really hard, you know, like the prospect of having to go abroad, for
example.
4
I started learning Spanish two years ago at a language school but now I’m having private
lessons with a native speaker. The course at the language school was, in my opinion, a
disaster, because whatever simple dialogues we did, the teacher was always correcting our
mistakes, which I found extremely frustrating. I mean, using a language is all about
exchanging ideas, making yourself understood and understanding others, so even if you
make some mistakes, they don’t really matter. In fact, worrying about grammar might stop
people from making progress with a language, because they may become too afraid to
speak.

Interviewer Today, on this week’s Think Business, we are joined by Stephanie Sparks, a
business consultant, who is going to talk to us about selecting a good business name. Hello,
Stephanie. Thank you for being with us today.
Stephanie It’s a pleasure. Thanks a lot for inviting me.
Interviewer Perhaps we could start with the basics. Why is it such a headache for a business
owner to choose the right name? Surely, you can get ahead with a no-nonsense business
name like John’s Car Parts or Brixton Plumbing?
Stephanie Yes, you can, but you’ll end up being one among dozens of companies with a
similar name, offering the same products and services. Although the names you’ve
mentioned describe your line of business, they’re much too broad and general to set you
apart from similar companies. You want your customers to immediately know what they can
expect in order to avoid wasting their time as well as yours. So the name you select must
convince your customers that you’re offering exactly what they’re looking for.
Interviewer Ah, I see. And …
Stephanie Sorry, but I’d just like to make a comment on the other name you’ve just
mentioned. Brixton Plumbing, wasn’t it? Actually, I usually discourage my clients from using
the names of districts or cities for their businesses.
Interviewer Why?
Password Reset Audioscript
Tests B1+

Stephanie Well, their customers may end up thinking that their market reach only covers the
area indicated by the name, which is often untrue. One of my clients complained recently
that he had hoped to serve more of the market than his name suggested, and that the name
was actually an obstacle to growth. So he had no choice but to change it. On the other hand,
I must admit that a geographical name might serve a practical purpose, but only at the start
of your business activity, when you want to be easily identified with your service area. But
usually, I don’t advise my clients to choose this type of name.
Interviewer Right, I see. Anything else to avoid while choosing a name?
Stephanie Yes, there is. I also do not recommend choosing business names which are
deliberately misspelled, for example Kwik-Fit (spelled k-w-i-k) or Phun Phlavors (spelled with
‘ph’ instead of ‘f’)! The main idea behind those kinds of names is that they should stand out
from the crowd, in other words, from your competitors. However, the internet is now full of
such names, which means they no longer catch the eye of potential customers. And even if
they do, they are often difficult to associate with a particular type of business activity. Most
importantly, though, they often have a negative impact on how your potential customers
view your business. For example, they might think you are not serious about your business.
Interviewer So, perhaps it’s best to choose simple names? Ones like Body Shop or General
Motors have been very successful, haven’t they?
Stephanie Yes, that’s true. But why? Well, simple names like the ones you’ve mentioned
have a sense of honesty about them but, on the other hand, they do not tell the customer
much about your product or service. As a result, your business can easily go unnoticed in a
flood of similar names. They usually require a huge marketing budget before they become
household names. Now, when you think of a typical start-up, it’s difficult to see how anyone
can afford it.
Interviewer OK, we’ve got a short commercial break now but we’ll be back in a moment to
talk about what’s essential when choosing the right business name…
