Introduction of Multinational Corporation (MNC):
A multinational corporation (MNC) is usually a large corporation incorporated in one country
which produces or sells goods or services in various countries. The two main characteristics of
MNCs are their large size and the fact that their worldwide activities are centrally controlled by
the parent companies.

Multinational companies are simple termed as the business enterprises which are having its
manufacturing, sales or services subsidiaries in more that one foreign country. It is also known as
transnational company or Multinational Enterprise. Two well known researchers Christopher
Bartlett and Sumantra Ghoshal has argued that in today’s global environment companies need to
face intense competition and simultaneously faces both strong cost pressure and strong pressure
for local responsiveness. According to them today’s MNCs do not reside in their home country
but can develop in any of the firm’s worldwide operation. So for multinational companies
maintain the flow of skills and products offerings should not be all one way from home country to
foreign subsidiary, rather the flow should be also from foreign subsidiary to the home country. The
basic operational strategy of a multination company is depicted below.

Graph: Multinational Companies

So a multinational company equally focused on the low cost and also the local responsiveness in
order to place their product in other foreign country.

Multinational Corporation of Bangladesh:

As we all know the economy of Bangladesh is growing rapidly and some initiatives by the

Current Situation of Multinational companies:

Most people dream of working at a multinational company because of all the advantages such jobs
bring. One benefit is that salaries and bonuses are usually higher than what domestic companies
offer and there are more opportunities for promotions. Another advantage is that their employees
have more opportunities to travel abroad, receive better training programs, and have access to the
best technology. Multinationals also offer employees opportunities for global advancement within
the organization. Employees are able to apply for international job openings in other locations
where the multinational operates like Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. If the company
really needs your particular skills and experience you could even be hired as an expat which means
all of your relocation expenses and part of your living expenses will be covered.

Another advantage is that in today’s global business environment working at a multinational makes
you attractive to other employers. If you take a look at job descriptions, many of them require or
prefer international or cross-cultural work experience. Having a big multinational on your CV will
boost your profile and make you more marketable for future job opportunities because employers
want qualified candidates with global work experience.
The History of Multi-National Company:
The progression and evolution of international business has played an integral role in the overall
development and progress of the world economy, culture, and politics. The multinational corporation
was an essential part of this process and has roots as far back as the 15th and 16th centuries in
Western Europe, specifically in the nations of England and Holland, during a period known as
mercantilism. This was a time of unprecedented global exploration, colonization, and other
imperialist ventures. Organizations such as the British East India Trading Company, promoted both
global trade and the acquisition of natural resources, primarily for their home countries in areas
including Africa, East Asia, and the Americas.

The history of multinational corporations is closely intertwined with the history of colonialism,
the first multinational corporations being founded to undertake colonial expeditions at the behest
of their European monarchical patrons. Prior to the era of New Imperialism, a majority European
colonies not held by the Spanish and Portuguese crowns were administered by chartered
multinational corporations Examples of such corporations include the British East India
Company, the Swedish Africa Company, and the Hudson's Bay Company. These early
corporations facilitated colonialism by engaging in international trade and exploration, and
creating colonial trading posts. Many of these corporations, such as the South Australia
Company and the Virginia Company, played a direct role in formal colonization by creating and
maintaining settler colonies. Without exception these early corporations created differential
economic outcomes between their home country and their colonies via a process
of exploiting colonial resources and labour, and investing the resultant profits and net gain in the
home country. The end result of this process was the enrichment of the colonizer and the
impoverishment of the colonized. Some multinational corporations, such as the Royal African
Company, were also responsible for the logistical component of the Atlantic slave
trade, maintaining the ships and ports required for this vast enterprise. During the 19th century,
formal corporate rule over colonial holdings largely gave way to state-controlled
colonies, however corporate control over colonial economic affairs persisted in a majority of
colonies.

During the process of decolonization, the European colonial charter companies were
disbanded, with the final colonial corporation, the Mozambique Company, dissolving in 1972.
However the economic impact of corporate colonial exploitation has proved to be lasting and far
reaching, with some commentators asserting that this impact is among the chief causes of
contemporary global income inequality.

Contemporary critics of multinational corporations have charged that some present day
multinational corporations follow the pattern of exploitation and differential wealth distribution
established by the now defunct colonial charter corporations, particularly with regards to
corporations based in the developed world that operate resource extraction enterprises in the
developing world such as Royal Dutch Shell, and Barick Gold. Some of these critics argue that the
operations of multinational corporations in the developing world take place within the broader
context of neocolonialism. However, as of 2015, multinational corporations from emerging
markets are playing an ever-greater role, increasingly impacting the global economy.

Vertically integrated multinational company manage production establishment in certain

renewable energy sector developing wind, hydrogen and solar power opportunities.

Innovations are a growing trend in today’s world and MNC’s are successful till they maintain their
innovativeness and creativity. Innovation does not necessarily come from the home country but it
can also be sourced in the local country. The MNC’s hire the employees of the local country so it

Corporate Social Responsibility:
The MNC’s are also affected by social and cultural factors of the local country. They have to
conduct the business according to the conditions in that country. The products should be
manufactured according to the needs and requirements of the people. The cultural and social
sentiments of the people should be taken care of.

But many times it happens that MNC’s also shape the social, cultural, political and even the legal
framework of the local country. The people of the local country many a times adapt to the products
of the MNC’s. For example; Unilever etc. have totally changed the daily habits of the people
wherever they have spread their business. The life style of the people changes.

Corporate responsibility describes positive ways through which multinational companies may
affect the society in which they operate. The Grameen phone and the Airtel Business Council on
Sustainable Development define CSR as “the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable
economic development – working with employees, their families, the local community and society
at large to improve their quality of life, in ways that are both good for business and good for
development”

Additionally, even though the term has been subject to many different meanings, CSR
includes:

 Ensuring that the private sector does not contribute to violations of human rights and
promotes the respect of these rights
 The respect of core labor standards
 Ensuring that local communities benefit from large companies’ operations in developing
countries
