Rivers are important in engineering as they can supply water and construction materials, and form corridors for transportation and ecology. Engineers design structures like hydroelectric dams that utilize river water to generate electricity. Wind is a growing source of renewable energy, and engineers factor wind conditions into building tall structures. The sea covers most of the earth and regulates climate, making it important for engineers to study underwater technologies like navigation, communication, and vehicles.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

CEGEOL220
GEOLOGY FOR CIVIL ENGINEERS
ACTIVITY SHEET 1

NAME: Balico, Ednalyn Anne F.______________________________

DATE: October 7, 2020 COURSE/YR&SECTION: BSCE II-E23

General Instruction:
Research the works of the following and their Engineering Importance.
 River
 Wind
 Sea

RIVER
Works:
A river is a large body of fresh, flowing water, according to National Geographic. It is a
body of water which can be deep and wide and sometimes shallow enough that allows some
people to come across it. The starting point of a river is called a “headwater”, this is where the
water begins to flow. It comes from rainfall or from the snow that melted from the mountains.
The other end or side of the river is called its “mouth”. This is where the water from the river
empties into a large body of water, into the lake or ocean. River has a great role because in
agriculture it is used for irrigation, also, for drinking water, for domestic uses and others.

Engineering Importance:
River is important in Engineering because it can supply water and construction aggregates,
and they also form ecological corridors and economical axes of transportation which is part of
the engineering field. Also, because of the technologies built and designed by engineers like
hydroelectric dams, the water from rivers is used in order that certain technology to work and
produce electricity.

Wind
Works:
Wind is defined as air in motion, it is produced by the uneven heating of the earth’s surface by
the sun. Air moves because of atmospheric pressure and that moving air is known as wind.
Winds perform denudation activity also but their erosion and transportation capacity are low
as compared to water.

Engineering Importance:
Wind is the fastest growing source of electricity and one of the least expensive forms of
renewable power. Wind is essential in engineering because when related to generating power,
wind helps us in avoiding the usage of dangerous waste products and what’s best is that wind
supply is unlimited. Also, wind is a factor that affects how a structure is formed like tall
buildings, electricity transmission towers, telecommunication towers and other types of
structure.

Sea
Works:
A sea is a body of salt water, that is partially or totally surrounded by land. The sea/ocean
produces over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our
atmosphere. Also, it covers 70% of the earth’s surface, the ocean transports heat from the
equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns.

Engineering Importance:
The sea is also important in engineering because this type of environment helps engineers to
know the details regarding the situations underwater and how we can make use of its sea’s
significance. Example is underwater navigation and communication through different types of
discovered technologies. Also, underwater vehicles are being improved and studied in order to
be able to research more and analyze how most of the technologies or vehicles on or under
water works like the advanced sea vessels.
