Expansion Loop Design Sheet

The document provides input data and calculations for the design of an expansion loop for a 10-inch nominal pipe size carrying fluid at 500°F. Key values calculated include the length between loops being 49.69 meters, the height and width of the loop being 5.31 meters and 3.71 meters respectively, and the stress in the loop being 1,247,999 pascals which is below the allowable stress limit. The axial force on the stop calculated is 17.46 kilonewtons.

Expansion Loop Design

(Prepared by Kashif Tufail)

Input Data
Nominal Pipe Size NPS 10 inch
Design Temperature Tmax = 500 oF
Ambient Temperature Tamb = 70 oF
∆T = 430
Coefficient of thermal expansion
(From Table C3 of ASME B31.3) α = 0.00000702 in/inoF
Expansion to be absorbed ∆L = 150 mm
= 5.905511811 inch
Total span = 300 m
Bend Length (From Nomograph) L2 = 47 ft
= 14325.6 mm

Calculated values
As L2 = 2H + W
Take W = 0.7H
So L2 = 2.7H
H = 17.407407407 ft
= 5305.7777778 mm
W = 12.185185185 ft
= 3714.0444444 mm
∆L = αL∆T
L = ∆L / α∆T
Length between loops L = 49691.910157 mm
49.691910157 m
Length between axial stops L1 = 53405.954601 mm
53.405954601 m
No. of loops = 5.6173511407 nos. Nomograph is taken
