Highway and Railroad Engineering Midterm Examination

1. The document provides instructions for a midterm exam on highway and railroad engineering. It outlines that students should choose answers for multiple choice questions and show work for problem solving questions within the allotted 1.5 hour time limit. 2. The exam contains 20 multiple choice identification questions to be answered directly on the paper without copying the full questions. It also contains 4 problem solving questions worth 20 points each that require showing steps. 3. There is a bonus question worth 15 additional points for designing superelevation for a given horizontal curve. The exam is out of a maximum 100 points.

HIGHWAY AND RAILROAD

ENGINEERING

MIDTERM EXAM
INSTRUCTIONS:
Please read the following instructions before proceeding with your examination.

1. For numbers 1-20, choose your answer on the given box. You don’t have to copy the questions given. Just
write your answer on your paper with the corresponding number.

2. For the problem solving part: Each item is 20 points each. Show your solutions and box your final answer.
Round off your final answer to the nearest two decimal places. No solution, no points.

3. Your exam is good for 1.5hrs only. No late submissions. Time will start at exactly 7:30 and will close on your
BS at exactly 9PM.

4. On the last page of this presentation, there is a bonus question. Anyone who can answer it will have an
additional 15 points. However, if your score exceed 100 points, it will automatically consider a perfect score.

5. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR MIDTERM EXAM. GOD BLESS!

IDENTIFICATION
INSTRUCTION: For items 1-20. Choose your answer from the given box below. Just write the correct answer on your
paper. No need to copy the questions.

VALLEY CURVE EXCEPTIONAL GRADIENT DESIGN SPEED

DEVIATION ANGLE SETBACK DISTANCE RULING GRADIENT
TRANSITION CURVE CARRIAGEWAY OVERTAKING SIGHT DISTANCE
LIMITING GRADIENT RUMBLE STRIPS CAMBER
MINIMUM GRADIENT ROAD CAPACITY NUMBER OF LANES
SUPERELEVATION HORIZONTAL CURVE VARIATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW
AADT COMPENSATED GRADIENT
1. It is the maximum speed that can be maintained over a specified section of the highway when
weather and traffic conditions are so favorable that the design features of the highway govern.
2. It is the maximum gradient within which the designer attempts to design the vertical profile of
the road.
3. It has a radius which decreases from infinity at the tangent point to a designed radius of the
circular curve.
4. It is a curve in plan to provide change in direction to the central line of the road.
5. It is the total width of road on which vehicles are allowed to move.
6. A transverse slope throughout the length of the horizontal curve.
7. It is steeper than the ruling gradient.
8. It is a grooved patterns rolled or milled into the pavement perpendicular to the direction of travel.
9. They should be limited for short stretches not exceeding about 100m at a stretch.
10. It is the distance from center of the horizontal curve to an obstruction on inner side of the curve.
11. It is the slope provided to the road surface in the transverse direction to drain off the rain water from the
road surface.
12. This curve is provided either when a descending gradient meets an ascending gradient or a flat gradient or a
descending gradient or when an ascending gradient meets another ascending gradient.
13. It refers to traffic volume or flow on a highway as measured by the number of vehicles
passing a partial station during a given interval of time
14. It is the maximum number of vehicles, which have a reasonable expectation of passing over a given
section of a lane or a roadway in one direction or in both directions during one hour under prevailing road and
traffic conditions.
15. It is determined from the estimated traffic volume for the
design year (AADT) and highway lane capacity at expected level of service.
16. The minimum distance open to vision of a driver intending to overtake slow vehicles.
17. This is important only at locations where drainage is important to install.
18. It is the difference between the ruling gradient and grade compensation.
19. The algebraic difference between two grades.
20. It is defined as the ratio of the average daily flow for each month to the annual average flow.
PROBLEM SOLVING
1. (20 points)
For a two-way traffic road, following are the particulars:
Speed of overtaking vehicle = 85kmph
Speed differential between the vehicles = 20 kmph
Acceleration of overtaking vehicle = 2.5 kmph/sec
Perception time of driver of overtaking vehicle = 2 secs.
Length of overtaking vehicle = 6 meters
Calculate the following:
a. Length of safe OSD
b. Minimum and desired length of overtaking zone.
2. (20 POINTS)
A two lane, one-way road with radius of 60 m is predominantly carrying lorries
with wheelbase of 5 m. The speed of lorries is restricted to be between 60 kmph
and 80 kmph. The mechanical widening and psychological widening required at 60
kmph are designated as Wme60 and Wps60 respectively. The mechanical widening
and psychological widening required at 80 kmph are designated as Wme80 and
Wps80 respectively. Find the correct values of the following:
a. Wme60
b. Wps60
c. Wme80
d. Wps80
3. (20 Points)
The following data are related to a horizontal curve portion of two late
highway. Given the data below, compute for the set back distance in
meters required from the centerline of the inner lane of pavement.

Length of curve = 250 meters

Radius of curve = 300 meters
Width of pavement = 7.5 meters
SSD = 90 meters
4. (20 points)

A valley curve is formed by a descending gradient of 1 in 25 which

meets an ascending gradient of 1 in 35. The speed of the vehicle is 60
kmph. t = 2.5 sec. f = 0.35. Design the total length of the valley curve.
BONUS ITEM WORTH 15 POINTS

Compute for the superelevation to be provided for a horizontal curve

with a radius of 200 m for a design speed of 65 kmph in plain terrain.
As per IRC, the computation of superelevation is based on the
assumption that it should counteract the centrifugal force developed at
0.75 times of the design speed.
