Unit 7 Activity
INSTRUCTIONS: Solve the following problems systematically. Write your complete solution and encircle
your final answer and make sure to write the corresponding unit. You may open your notes and
references for you to be guided in doing the activity.
1. A vertical summit (crest) curve has tangent grade of +0.5% and a -1.0% grade for a road which will
provide a stopping sight distance of 190 m. Height driver’s eye above the pavement is 1.07 m. and
the height of the object ahead is 0.15 m. Compute the minimum length of a crest vertical curve for a
design speed of 100 kph. (Ans. 60 m)
2. A building is located 5.8 m. from the centerline of the inside lane of a curve section of highway with
120 m. radius. The road is level. Perception-reaction time is 2.5 sec. and coefficient of friction is
0.35. Determine the appropriate speed limit in kph considering stopping sight distance. (Ans. 56.25
kph)
3. Compute the passing sight distance that vehicle A could move while overtaking the slow moving
vehicle B before meeting the on-coming vehicle C. (Ans. 614.88 m.)
4. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) requires that cars must switch on their head lights when
travelling at night time to avoid accidents. Car specifications requires head light to have an angle of
tilt of 1° above the longitudinal axis of the car and at a height of 0.90 m. above the pavement. If a
car passes through a vertical sag parabolic curve 153 m. long having grade tangents of -4.4% and
3.2% respectively.
a. What max speed could a car maneuver on this curve to prevent sliding if the coefficient of
friction between tires and pavement is 0.15? (Ans. 89.17 kph)
b. Compute the max head lamp sight distance to avoid collision along the curve. (Ans. 167.62 m)
c. If a driver approaching this curve sees an object ahead of him, find the time taken from the
instant the object is visible to the driver to the instant the brakes are applied effectively if the
coefficient of friction between tires and pavement is 0.15. (Ans. 1.65 sec).
