Lesson 3: Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? 你叫什么名字?

Learning Objectives: After the lesson, the students will be able to

a. Demonstrate ability to introduce their name and use simple greeting expressions and respond
appropriately to these greetings
b. Remember a list of vocabulary related to greetings, and simple introductions, and name
introduction
c. Construct simple declarative and interrogative Chinese sentences

Warm-up: VOCABULARY

Text 1:
Person A: Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? Person A: What’s Your name?

Person B: Wǒ jiào Lǐ Yuè. Person B: My name is Li Yue.

Variations:

A: Nǐde míngzi shì shénme? What’s your name?

B: Wǒde míngzi shì Lǐ Yuè. My name is Li Yue.

Discussion : The Interrogative Pronoun “shénme 什么”

Examples :

a. Nǐ xiǎng chī shénme? (What do you want to eat?)


b. Nǐ xiǎng zuò shénme? (What do you want to do?)

Text 2:
Person A: Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma? Are you a teacher?

Person B: Wǒ búshì lǎoshī, wǒ shì xuésheng. No, I'm not. I’m a student.

5. 是 shì v. to be
6. 老师 lǎoshī n. teacher
7. 吗 ma part. Used at the end of a question
8. 学生 xuésheng n. student

Discussion: The “shì 是”

- Used as a verb “to be” (am, is are)


- The negative form, just add “bu 不”

Examples:

a. wǒ shì Fēilǜbī rén. (I am Filipino.)


b. Wǒ shì lǎoshī. Wǒ bú shì xuésheng. (I am a teacher. I am not a student. )

Discussion: The “ma 吗”

- Indicates an interrogative mood. When “ma” is added into a declarative sentence, it becomes a
question answerable by yes or no.

Example:

Declarative sentence: Nǐ shì lǎoshī. (You are a teacher?)

Interrogatiüe sentence: Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma? (Are you a teacher?)
