ABSTRACT

During any crisis situation like a natural disaster, war, or pandemic, home-based
learning could meet the academic needs of learners. Most schools and universities
switched face-to-face learning to home-based due to the Covid-19 pandemic
outbreak. The research study was carried out to know and analyze the perception of
grade 12 learners at Malasiqui Catholic School on time management during home-
based learning. Effective time management is linked to improved academic
performance and reduced anxiety in students; however, many students struggle to
strike a balance between their studies and their daily lives during this current
circumstance of the pandemic.
The researchers used Descriptive type of research design and collected data in
the use of a Google form survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to a
total of 60 respondents divided into 4 sections of grade Senior High School in
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc. Findings revealed that the time management skill of
most learners was somewhat affected by the home-based learning in the reason of
the out-of-control circumstances of learners. In relationship with these, the learners
must be encouraged by teachers, parents, and another concierge to have strategies
on how to maintain a good time management skill and overcome those challenges
brought upon by the pandemic.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

21st-century education calls for a productive teaching–learning system that is

expected to transform the entire education system from traditional face-to-face to

home-based due to the pandemic outbreak. The deadly and infectious disease

Corona Virus also known as Covid-19 has deeply affected the global status. United

Nations Educational, Scientific and, Cultural Organization (UNESCO), were engaged

in remote learning at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This tragedy has also shaken up the education sector, and this fear is likely to

resonate across the education sector globally. The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak

forced many schools and colleges to remain closed temporarily and have

discontinued face-to-face teaching. The digital learning platforms usually used in

home-based learning are; Zoom, Google meet, Messenger, and etc. to maintain

active and effective learning for learners.

As a reaction to the obstacles presented by the pandemic, the Department of

Education proposed their Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan, which handled

the fundamental prerequisites of training in the hour of COVID-19 to empower

essential schooling students to keep learning and empower instructors to convey

guidance in a protected learning climate.

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

The Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc. took an action and prepared for adjustment

of the implementation of home-based learning to ensure the continuous education of

learners. Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc. has also prepared to provide an efficient

setup for the new normal education with the help of their program ALDCS Flex Mode

which corresponds to Alternative Learning Delivery in Catholic Education with

Flexible Learning Experience through Modular and Blended learning.

From the time when the home-based learning was implemented because of the

pandemic outbreak. A lot of things were changed worldwide and specifically in

academic terms, one of the most affected was the time management of learners

which has a vital role for achieving their academic success. With this, the

researchers aimed to explore how grade 12 learners in Malasiqui Catholic School

Inc. perceive the COVID-19 crisis and what their personal experiences were while

studying during the global pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.

works to improve their Time Management. On the other hand, the study will benefit

those being guide on by improving.

Parents. This study will serve as awareness for all the parents that have a child

who's having a poor time management. They can also give an advice or idea on how

to manage their time.

Teachers. This study will help teachers who are having a hard time for their

learners who are having a poor Time Management.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as guidelines in the future

researcher when they conduct a research. They can also get an idea related to this

topic which can expand their knowledge in pursuing another study on Time

Management.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

The subject of this study is limited to the grade 12 learners of Malasiqui Catholic

School, Inc. in Malasiqui, Pangasinan during the school year 2020-2021. This study

considered the respondents profile, background and experiences that has impact on

their perceptions and views about their time management during home based

learning. Each respondent is given the same survey questionnaires via Google form.

Definition of Key Terms

For better understanding, the following terms are operationally defined

according to their use in this study:

Perception – it refers to the individual's or group's unique way of viewing their

Time Management during home-based learning.

Grade 12 learners - they were the respondents of this study from Malasiqui

Catholic School, Inc.

Time management- it is main instrument which everyone’s need to survive

inside or outside the school.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

Foreign Literature

An article by the American Society for Engineering Education (2015), more

specific to online learning environments, while investigating student time

management in distance education, found time management to be a predictor of

student success. Relationships were noted for specific time management skills,

ability to balance multiple roles, pacing ability, self-direction, and quality of work.

Furthermore, students who were able to prioritize time commitments experienced

great success. Conversely, poor time management was given as a reason for

dropping distance education courses. Procrastination was found to yield a negative

impact on completion.

One hundred ninety-one students at the University of Houston were surveyed in

2014 in order to explore relationships between students’ time management skills and

the course features of online versus face-to-face courses. The research aimed to

obtain a clearer understanding of the elements that are associated with a student’s

ability to manage time effectively in order to successfully complete courses.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and, Cultural Organization)

has observed that “Most governments around the world have temporarily closed

educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19

pandemic. These nationwide closures are impacting over 60% of the world’s student

population. Several other countries have implemented localized closures impacting

millions of additional learners.” Overall, close to 200 countries closed their schools in
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

the spring, thereby interrupting the education of more than 1.5 billion young people.

Therefore, there is a need to reflect deeply on our education systems in light of this

unprecedented crisis.

Regarding to the related foreign literature above, those articles emphasized the

perception of learners on time management in distance learning. It mentioned the

implementation of home-based learning due to the pandemic outbreak Covid-19.

Relating to this study, they are similar in the line of how the students perceive time

management during home-based learning.

Local Literature

There is an old saying that “Time is gold." It is also the only thing that people

cannot replace. Time flies so quickly that once it is gone, nobody can ever bring it

back. According to Ferner (2003), “time controls and limits how we use other

resources. Thus, it is often referred to as our most valuable resource.” Similarly, in

the health care setting, time affects both money and quality. For every individual,

there is a finite and identifiable limit to the minutes and hours available to do work

and for leisure. How you use it defines the person’s character and values about time.

An article by Heibutzki (2021), a college environment's freedom and flexibility

can derail students who haven't mastered time-management skills. Having left high

school's rigidly structured schedules behind, students often struggle to balance

academic, personal and work commitments after arriving on campus. Faced with
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

so many competing demands on their time, many students simply give up and let

the situation take its course. Without intervention from a professor or parent, a

student is unlikely to succeed.

The Managing Time Effectively by Rios (2016), said that time is a very scarce

resource. While it seems too many people that there's plenty of it, time is clicking

away every single moment. Before long, one realizes that he or she has already

wasted a lot by just letting time pass by without making good use of it. Time waits for

no one. The smart thing for one to do is to be ready with things to do for any time

available.

In local related literature, there is an old saying that time is gold and it is a

thing that people can’t change. Relating those articles to this study, time

management is the main topic and it emphasized how important time management

to individual, inside or outside the school.

Foreign Studies

The study entitled Students’ Perceptions on Time Management during Distance

Education: A multinational study Fidalgo (2020) stated that in order to develop such
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

programs, it is useful to determine if students are receptive to taking such online

courses and are prepared to do so. This study addresses students’ perceptions and

their interest in DE. In addition, it provides a comparative analysis across three

countries whose IHEs do not have extensive offerings in DE. The results of this

research provide some strategies to encourage and support students to take DE

courses. Students’ perceptions of DE vary across the participants from the three

countries. Portuguese and Ukrainian students rated DE more favorably than UAE

students. Half of the Ukrainian students have experience with DE which might

account for their favorable attitude. In contrast, in Portugal only a very small

percentage of the students had experience. However, this does not seem to have

negatively influenced their attitude towards DE. The interest level and engagement

with new technologies by Portuguese students may help explain the favorable

perception the participants had toward DE. A study by Costa, Faria, and Neto (2018)

found that 90% of Portuguese students use new technologies and 69% of them use

new technologies more than an hour and a half a day. Based on three European

studies, Diário de Noticias (2011) stated that Portuguese students “appear at the

forefront of those who best master information and communication technologies

(ICT).” (para.1) Another factor influencing respondents might be that currently, and

for the first time, the Portuguese government has passed a law that will regulate DE

in the country. This new law will open the possibility for other IHEs to provide DE

courses that lead to a degree.

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

The study entitled Students’ Perception and Preference for Online Education in

India during COVID -19 pandemic by T Muthuprasad (2020). In this study, he

focused on understanding Student’s perception on time management and

preference towards the online learning through an online survey of 307 students. He

also explored the student’s preferences for various attributes of online classes,

which will be helpful to design effective online learning environment. The results

indicated that majority of the respondents (70%) are ready to opt for online classes

to manage the curriculum during this pandemic. Majority of the students preferred to

use smart phone for online learning. Using content analysis, we found that students

prefer recorded classes with quiz at the end of each class to improve the

effectiveness of learning.

A study by Mohammed (2020) entitled The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on

the Academic Performance of Veterinary Medical Students, the time management

and academic performance of veterinary Medical Students was affected due to the

Covid-19 outbreak. The current cross-sectional study was carried out to analyze the

impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the academic performance of veterinary medical

students and researchers.

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

The mentioned foreign studies above are related to the researcher’s present

study because they stated the Perceptions of learners on Academic Performance

specifically to their time management during home-based learning.

Local Studies

The study entitled The Relationship of Time Management to Academic

Performance of Selected Third Year Nursing Students of Arellano University by

Mendoza (2010) said that many nursing students complain about needing more time

to perform various roles in different settings. They have to manage time not only as

students but also as a child, partner, or a friend. Being a student alone is stressful

because of the expectation of parents and relatives to perform well in school. With

the escalating burden in the workload of nursing student as graduation approaches,

time management becomes even more difficult. One has to juggle his time for both

academics and clinical duties without compromising his academic performance.

The study of Lualhati (2019) entitled Time Management Practices of Educators

in a State University: Views and Implications is a descriptive study revealed the time

management practices of the faculty members in a state university in the Philippines.

By employing self-made questionnaire, data on time management practices along

with scheduling, goal setting, prioritizing tasks, managing paperwork and managing

interruptions and challenges met by the teachers on managing their time were

gathered. Analyses of the treated data showed that the respondents practiced
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

scheduling, goal setting, prioritizing task, managing paperwork, and managing

interruptions and excessive paperwork and reports is a common challenge met by

the faculty members in managing their time. This study offered recommendations

that may contribute significantly to their success as an educator and person.

According to the study established by Lorenzo (2015) entitled Time

Management Skills Related to Clinical Performance among Level-IV Nursing

Students of Colegio De San Juan De Letran Calamba, the study determined the time

management skills of Level-IV Letran Nursing students. In light of the findings, the

researchers therefore concluded that the respondents had a time-attitudes time

management skill. The researchers also learned that the head nursing clinical

performance of the respondents was 84.70%. On the other hand, there was no

significant relationship between the time management skill and clinical performance

of the respondents. But there was a significant relationship between the number 3

and 5 questions of the long-term time management skill as to the clinical

performance of the respondents. Future researchers could extend studies on

adapting different time management skills and determining factors related to the

clinical performance of the students, such as academic performance and co-

curricular activities.

The mentioned local studies above are related to the researcher’s current study

because they explain that the academic performance of learners had relationship to
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

the time management of learners. Learners should manage their time not just as a

learner but also as a child, friend and etc.

Theoretical Framework

There are three theories that were used in this research these are Theory of

Time Management, Theory of Academic Achievement and The Prickle Jar Theory.

According to Covey (1999) time management involves identifying tasks and

recognizing demands on time. People have the habit to look for effectiveness and

consequences rather than the methods and efficiency of time management. Covey

opined that the key to success is to concentrate on highly important but not urgent

issues. Macan (1994) suggested that learning time management behaviors lead to

greater perception of control over time. Time management can be considered as a

cluster of skills that are significant to academic success and include activities

performed by students like advance planning, work prioritization, preparation for test

and following schedules Sansgiry et al. (2006). This theory is related to research that

every people has different perspectives on their lives on how they manage their

time. It can be related on students by balancing time management and study

techniques effectively.

Walberg’s theory of academic achievement posits that psychological

characteristics of individual students and their immediate psychological

environments influence educational outcomes (cognitive, behavioral, and attitudinal)

Reynolds & Walberg (1992). This theory related to research on how they can
Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

achieve a good academic performance and a balance time to achieve it. It can be

related to students.

The Pickle Jar Theory uses a metaphor to illustrate an essential point of time

management. The pickle jar is comparable to our life. Sand, pebble and rocks inside

the jar have their own meanings. The rocks represent the major important task that

has serious consequences if not accomplished on time. The pebbles represent the

daily tasks with average importance. The sand represents unimportant tasks like

phone calls, e-mails, social media notifications. The sand thus denotes distracting

activities. If the jar is filled with sand first, there will be no space for the pebbles and

rocks. If the jar is filled with pebbles, there is some space for sand but no space for

the rock. If the jar is filled with rocks first, pebbles second and sand at last, there are

rooms for all the three. This denotes a simple lesson that if one fulfills the major

tasks first, there will be room to complete other tasks as well as get time for leisure

Mulder (2017). This theory is related to research on how they divide their time and

prioritize the important tasks to unimportant tasks. It is also a technique to facilitate

better use of time.

Conceptual Framework

The framework of the study is shown below. The variables under the first figure

which is the (input) containing the profile of the respondents and the set of terms

regarding how the Grade 12 learners at Malasiqui Catholic School often use their

Recommendations

Based on findings and conclusions presented, the following recommendation

suggested:

[1] Learners

 Learners should be self-motivated and be disciplined to do their academic tasks

especially in the line of a pandemic. No matter how hard the situation is, don’t be

totally affected by it. In such a vital needs not only for learners but for anyone

which is the time management. Keep to-do-list and prioritize what should be.

 Avoid multitasking which can actually decrease your productivity. Focus on one

assignment at a time and zero in on the specific task at hand, whether that’s

studying for an exam, reading a textbook, emailing a professor, or participating

in an online forum. Arrange your tasks in order of importance, and pay attention

to the three or four crucial tasks that require the most effort.

 Sleep is essential to rest your body and keep your mind fresh for the next day.

Try to get seven to eight hours of rest a night. Pulling all-nighters is less

productive than studying consistently. Include sleep in your schedule, and you

can reap huge rewards.

Malasiqui Catholic School, Inc.
Malasiqui Pangasinan 2421 Philippines

[2] Parents

 Parents should monitor their children’s routine and how they manage their time.

 They must encourage their children to celebrate their accomplishments and

treating themselves to something they truly enjoy, whether that’s watching their

favorite show on Netflix or movie. If you’ve been working on an assignment for

several months in a row, then take a week off when you’re finished.

[3] Teachers

 They must provide additional helpful strategies to their learners who are

encountering poor time management.

 They must be able to strengthen the perspective of learners on Time

Management.

[4] Future Researchers

 They must set a questionnaire that shows about how learners perceive their time

management as a basis on what things needed to be improved and developed.

 They must propose a program that can emphasize the importance of time

management to an individual’s daily life.
