Background & Purpose

Since launch of Poseidon (bizhub 227/287) in July 2015 a new board architecture has been implemented.
In regards of the changed board architecture of so called IT5* devices, this TNI should be a help to get a better
understanding about this complex topic.
Electronical parts in office devices are usually expensive and also the exchange could become difficult. Additionally
to that it is sometimes not really clear where data is stored and what happened if one or more parts are exchanged.
The purpose of this TNI is to:

1.) Create a better understanding about how and where data in the devices is stored and written
2.) What happens if parts will be exchanged
3.) Easier localization of error sources
4.) Avoid time and data loss
5.) Get a better understanding where an unknown machine behavior can come from

IT5*= Poseidon (bizhub 227,287), ZeusS (bizhub C258,C308,C368), Helios (bizhub C227,C287) and future
products.

The above figure explains where and which data is going through and what happens if either new EEPROMs/ERB
or a new eMMC will be exchanged.
Please be aware that used EEPROMs/ERBs and used eMMCs already contain data. This data overwrites the data
from internal SPI flash of the MFPB. Therefore it is recommended to NOT exchange those used parts from another
device for trouble shooting.
New EEPROMs/ERBs and new eMMCs do not contain data. The data, stored in the internal SPI Flash of the
MFPB, is written to those new parts.

Order organization of MFPB, eMMC & EEPROM/ERB

Model Service Parts Security Parts
Zeus Series / Minerva MFPB, PRCB SSD Board
Series
Poseidon / ZeusS / Helios MFPB, EEPROM / ERB eMMC Board

How to order as spare part via CSES report

Due to the fact that MFPB and EEPROMs/ERB are service parts, those parts can be ordered as normal parts order.
The eMMC is a security part same as the SSD Board from ZeusMLK series, those parts need to be ordered via
CSES report with detailed information which shows us that other parts already have been tested etc.

Recommendation and Identification

Please be aware that NOT every single boot problem is related to the eMMC board, as it was partly the common
opinion about the SSD Boards from Zeus MLK series, which was also not the truth.

If you are not sure if a problem is related to MFPB, EEPROM / ERB or eMMC, the official recommended exchange
order is:

1. Exchange the MFPB with a brand new or a used one (which is working correctly). Always keep the original
MFPB and never set this into another device for crosschecking etc. If the problem is not solved, change
the original MFPB back.

Exchanging the MFPB with a new one:

Exchanging a Used MFPB (To find out if MFPB is damaged):

2. Exchange the EEPROM / ERB with a brand new one (not a used one, Note: ALL maintenance counter will
be initialized), if the problem is not solved, change the original EEPROMs/ERB back.

3. Exchange the eMMC Board with a brand new one (not a used one). Note: ALL Administrator data will be
initialized.

Replacement procedure of MFPB

1. Turn main power OFF

2. Remove the original (faulty) MFP board from the main body
3. Remove the original eMMC, 2 x EEPROMs, RAM module from the original board, and put those on the
new MFP board
Notes:
2 x EEPROMs needed to be positioned correctly. The top one needs to put on the top of the MFP board.
The bottom one needs to put at the bottom. Also, the directions of those EEPROMs need to be correct.
Marking on EEPROMs before removing is recommended.
4. Install the new MFPB assembled with original eMMC, 2 x EEPROMs, RAM module
5. Install the original HDD back into the system
6. Plug a USB memory which contains firmware into the USB port near Control Panel
Notes:
“FW0002” folder needs to be saved in the root directly of the USB memory.
7. Push and hold “Stop” button on the Control Panel while turning the main power ON
8. Hold it until a black dot appears at the top right corner of the touch panel
9. Wait until Firmware Update Screen appears (it would take about 2 minutes)
10. After Firmware Update Screen appears, touch [Machine Type] and input the correct value in [Machine]
and [Type]. Do not forget to touch [Fix] after inputting the values
Refer to the table below for the values.
First 4 digits of S/N A7PU A7PY A7R0
[Machine] 6 6 6
[Type] 1 2 D

11. Touch “Start”

Wait until the firmware update process is completed (it would take 2-3 minutes)
12. Once it is completed (the “Start” button will be lit in blue), remove the USB memory and turn the main
power OFF/ON
13. Wait until the machine completes the boot up
14. The machine will detect a fault, and may re-boot itself several times
Notes:
Although Service Manual describes “C-D390 code will appear”, the code may not appear. Another fault
code (most likely C-FA14) would appear instead of C-D390.
15. When C-FA14 or another fault code appears, enter the Service Mode, and perform [Logical Format] of
HDD
[State Confirmation]  [Memory/Storage Adjustment]  2/2 page  [Format]
 [Logical Format]
16. After “Please turn the main switch off and on” message appears, turn the main power OFF/ON
17. In case C-D390 appears after step13, touch [Recover Data] and [Yes]
When “Turn the main switch OFF and ON” message appears, turn the main power OFF/ON

Field Experiences
To identify if a boot problem is related to the MFPB, EEPROMs or eMMC, experiences from the last 10 months
since launch of devices with the new board architecture showed that you can try to test the MFPB or the eMMC in
another device. If the same behavior is present you can be nearly sure which, part is defect.
It is NOT possible to test the EEPROMs, neither partly nor as set, in another device or devices with different speed
(e.g. C258C368).

Test to figure out if an eMMC is defect:

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

DO NOT change an eMMC from a working Machine to a defective Machine, because if so, you will lose data.
Please refer to the example below:

Machine B’s eMMC

data are stored to the
internal SPI flash of
Machine A.

Machine B’s eMMC

data are stored to the
new eMMC.
