Sikolohiyang Pilipino: Charlene June Diezon Kristine Nantay Thea Ericka Villan

This document discusses Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino Psychology). It was introduced in the 1970s by Virgilio Enriquez to develop a psychology based on indigenous Filipino concepts. Some key aspects are: it analyzes Filipino culture, language and experiences; it aims to better understand the Filipino personality and improve mental health services; and basic tenets include pakikipagkapwa (togetherness) and pakikiramdam (inner perception of others' emotions). While criticized for its limited applicability and use of the Filipino language, proponents argue it provides a uniquely Filipino perspective on psychology.

• Lastly, as a sikolohiyang mapagpalaya (liberating psychology)

The main goal of Sikolohiyang
Pilipino
• Its goal is to understand better the Filipino personality based on one’s
experience and way of life. This understanding of Sikolohiyang Pilipino can
the used to improve mental health services or therapy specifically for
Filipinos
Basic Tenets
PAKIKIPAG KAPWA
• Kapwa means being together or the togetherness of people which
is the core concept of the sikolohiyang Pilipino
• According to Enriquez, Filipinos have the term “Pakikipag kapwa”
Or Kapwa tao where the Other is not only experienced on the
outside but also on the inside
• It has two kinds:
• ibang tao (Other people) and Hindi ibang tao (One-of-us)
PAKIKIPAG KAPWA
Ibang tao Hindi ibang tao
• Pakikitungo: Civility.
• Pakikisalamuha: act of mixing: ability to • Pakikipagpalagayang-loob:
adapt mutual trust
• Pakikilahok: Act of joining. participation of • Pakikisagkot: joining others or
entire community to help a person active involvement
• Pakikibagay: conformity: this runs into • Pakikipagkaisa: being one with
conflict with individuality which many
others
Filipinos in fact willingly throw away in
favor of conformity with demand of those
who are in charge
• Pakikisama: being united with the group
Pivotal Interpersonal Value
• Pakikiramdam: Inner perceptions. Filipinos use damdam or the inner
persecption of others’ emotions, as a basic tool to guide his dealings with
other people

• Kagandahang-loob: Shared humanity. This refers to being able to help other
people in dire need due to a perception of being together as a part of one
Filipino humanity.
Accommodative surface
• Hiya: loosely translated as ‘shyness’ (Utang na loob). Filipinos are expected
by their neighbors to return favors, whether these were asked for or not.

• Pakikisama: This attitude is primarily guided by conformity with the

majority
Confrontative surface
• Bahala na (Bathala): it is a Filipino expression. Filipino engage to bahala na
attitude as a culture-influenced adaptive coping strategy when faced with
challenging situations.

• Lakas ng Loob: Being courageous in the midst of problems and uncertainties

• Pakikibaka: concurrent clashes. One of the ability of the Filipino to undertake

revolutions and uprising against a common enemy
Societal values
• Karangalan: translated to dignity. This refers to what other people see in a person
and how they use that information to make a stand or judge his/her worth
Puri- the external aspect dignity. May refer to how other people judge a
person of his/her worth. This compels a common Filipino to conform to social
norms, regardless how obsolete they are
Dangal- the internal aspect of dignity. May refers to how a person judges his
own worth
• Katarungan: Loosely translated to justice, refers to equity in giving rewards to a
person
• Kalayaan: Freedom and mobility. Ironically, this may clash with the less
important value of pakikisama or pakikibagay (Conformity)
Lines of Filiations on Philippine
Psychological Thought
• 1. Academic-Scientific Psychology: Western

• 2. Academic-philosophical Psychology: Clergy

• 3. Ethnic Psychology: Indigenous Psychology

• 4. Psycho-Medical System: Religion- cohesive element and explanation

In Filipino Social Sciences, unique
approaches and methods are as
follows:
• A. Pakikipagkwentuhan- "to tell a story“

• B. Panunuluyan- "to go in." The researcher will be staying at the participant's

house and observing his/her family and their lifestyle.

• C. Pagdalaw-dalaw- "visit." As oppose to panunuluyan, this one states that

the researcher will occassionally visit the participant's house.

• D. Pakikiramdam- "inner perception of emotions." The researcher will use

his/her emotions to feel if the participant has interest in his/her research.
The Status of Sikolohiyang Pilipino
now
• Despite the death of Enriquez on the early 90’s sikolohiyang Pilipino
continues to thrive. Its proponents continue to advocate for a psychology that
is truly responsive and reflective to the needs and the unique situation of
Filipino people.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• The strength of the study is that it helps change the knowledge that was left
by the early psychology that was taught in schools long ago. This helps to
make everyone, even foreigners, understand that Filipinos have good hearts,
characteristics and personality unlike those lessons that are taught to them
before.
• The weakness of the study is that it limits the applicability perspective
because it focuses on local context and it limits the users and readers
because it is written in Filipino language
