Q3 - Math6LAS W4.2 1

This learning activity sheet provides practice with solving routine and non-routine word problems involving numerical expressions and equations. It contains examples of routine and non-routine problems, rules for solving equations, and two activities - one with single-step equations and one with multi-step word problems. The second activity contains a "maze" of word problems for students to solve and color-code their work to find the correct path. Scoring is based on correctly answering all questions within the two activities.

QUARTER 3, Week 4.2

Name of Learner: ______________________________________ Date:________________

Learning Area : MATHEMATICS VI Score:_______________

I. Introductory Concept CONCEPT

INTRODUCTORY

Good day everyone! After you have learned about numerical

expressions and equations, this time, you are going to apply them in
solving word problems. The following activities will deepen your
understanding about numerical expressions and equations.
Understanding and analyzing word problems are the things you needed
to easily find the answer.

II. Learning Skills fromSKILLS

LEARNING the MELC
from the MELCs

Solves routine and non-routine problems involving different types of

numerical expressions and equations such as 7 + 9 = _____ + 6
(M6AL-IIIf-19)

III. ACTIVITIES

Routine Problem – involves using at least one of the four arithmetic

operations and /or ratio to solve problems that are practical in
nature.
Non-Routine Problem – is any complex problem that requires some
degree of creativity or originality to solve. Non-routine problems
typically do not have an immediately apparent strategy for solving
them. Often times, these problems can be solved in multiple ways.

To solve an algebraic word problem, you need to: Define a

variable, write an equation using the variable, and solve the
equation.

Example of Routine Problem:

Mark had 20 marbles. He gave some to his friends. Now he has
8 marbles. How many did he give to his friends?

Example of Non-Routine Problem:

There are two numbers whose sum is 36. One number is twice
the other. What are the numbers?

There are 4 basic rules for solving equations:
1. Addition Property of Equality: If the same quantity is added to both sides
of an equation, the resulting equation is equivalent to the original
equation.
x–1=2 x–1+1=2+1
Identity property of addition
x+0=3
x=3
2. Subtraction Property of Equality: If the same quantity is subtracted from
both sides, the resulting equation is equivalent to the original.
x+2=5 x+2–2=5–2
x+0=3
x=3
3. Multiplication Property of Equality: If both sides of an equation are
multiplied by the same nonzero quantity, the resulting equation is
equivalent to the original equation.
𝑚 𝑚
=3 ( ) x2=3x2
2 2
2𝑚
=6 m=6
2
4. Division Property of Equality: If both sides of an equation are divided by
the same nonzero quantity, the resulting equation is equivalent to the
original equation.

Let us solve the given routine and non-routine problems.

Mark had 20 marbles. He gave some to his friends. Now he has 8
marbles. How many did he give to his friends?

Let n be the number of marbles Mark gave to his friends

Solution:
20 – n = 8
Applying the subtraction property of equality, we have
20 – 20 – n = 8 – 20 subtract 20
0 – n = -12
-n = -12
Applying the multiplication property of equality, we have
(-1)(-n) = -12 (-1) multiply -1
n = 12
Answer: Mark gave 20 marbles to his friends.

There are two numbers whose sum is 36. One number is twice the
other. What are the numbers?

2
Let m be the first number
2m is the second number
Solution:
m + 2m = 36
3m = 36
3𝑚 36
= division property of equality
3 3
m = 12
2m = 2(12) = 24 substitution
The numbers are 12 and 24.

Find me now!
Direction: Solve for N in each equation
1. 36 + N = 100
2. N - 15.5 = 23.4
3. 10N = 90

5. 3𝑁 + 5 = 32
