What is mathematics?

- Mathematics deals with numbers, shapes, patterns symbols, equations; and


involves measuring, counting, calculation, computation, and solving of
problems.
- It is also the study that requires critical thinking, logical reasoning, and
creativity. For instance, most of us every time we try to answer a certain
mathematical problem, we tend to think of a way to solve the problem and if
that certain way didn’t work, we would find another solution again and we will
never stop until we get to the right answer. This is somehow math helps us to
be a better thinker.

Where is mathematics?

- Mathematics exists in everything and everywhere. If we look at nature, there


are numbers all around us. For example, look at flowers; they have three or
five petals. Another is that in our day-to-day activities, we used mathematics
even without knowing it. Such dialing numbers on phone; when going
shopping, we prepare a list of items we require and calculate the amount of
money needed for it; when preparing food, we always measure the different
ingredients to cook the desired quantity only. All this calculation is based on
numbers that come from mathematics. Thus, there is no such area where the
concept of mathematics is not used.

What role does mathematics play in our world?

- Mathematics is a bridge in building and creating a better world. It can explain


several phenomenon and events, helps organize patterns and regularities in
our world, predict the behavior of nature and phenomena in the world, and
control nature and occurrences in our world. Math is used in a variety of
fields, including technology, business, and the natural sciences. In today’s
world of advanced technology, for instance, almost every field of human and
even non-human activities are all impossible without mathematics. Math has
played an important role in the development and design of many advanced
technologies; the design and functions of the technology could not be
possible without the help of mathematical knowledge. To conclude, our world
would be incomplete without mathematics.
What is it about mathematics that have changed your thoughts about it?

- I never thought that mathematics could bring a systematic result that would


be important in everyday life. I opt to think that mathematics was just a simple
function and equation of plus, minus, multiply, and divide. However, as I
began to comprehend its nature, I realized that it is much more than just the
basic function and equation of MDAS. Mathematics has changed my
perspective that an individual who thinks mathematically will have a broader
perspective in everything he or she does because it relies on both logic and
creativity where it is applied practically. Everything is connected in
mathematics and I viewed it as a vital core which deals on our daily living and
the complexity our lives may bring forth unto us.
