Dear Eighteen Magazine,

I am Claire, 18, and I am really at my wits end on what to do about my

grandmother who keeps on interfering with the decisions I am making in my life.
Nobody and nothing seem to be good enough for her or is anywhere near her
standards! She always comments on how I dress (a t-shirt and short shorts are
common nowadays anyway). She always rants about how I always listen to loud
music and watch violent films. One time, she even comments about how much perfume
I am spraying!
We are from a small family and my grandmother really has nowhere else to live
but with us. It will break my heart to see my lola living on her own, but I am really
frustrated at the way she controls my life. I am really in desperate need for your advice.

What is the problem What details about What solution can you think of
that needs to be the problem are based on what you learned from

In today’s lesson, we will return to the skill of listening and reading. Listening
and reading are activities we do with a clear purpose. We embark on a
listening/reading activity with a clear goal. We listen/read to be informed, to get
answers to questions, or to be entertained. In this module, we will listen and read
with a different purpose. This purpose is to give solutions to problems.

What’s New
In the past, people with problems sometimes send letters to newspapers to
seek for advice. There is a special part in a newspaper for people with problems. This
was known as the “agony column” of a newspaper. In more modern times, people
send letters asking advice to different magazines; there are also different radio
programs in which listeners call and ask for advice for many kinds of problems (ex.
family problems, relationship problems, legal problems).

Nowadays, social media is being used to express problems and ask for
solutions or advice. In Facebook, there are ‘groups’ created for a certain group of
people (ex. a group for mothers) and it is thru these groups that members share
problems and advice to one another.

Let’s Think:

1. Do you know any magazine or radio program that has writers or listeners
asking for advice?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

2. Have you tried asking for advice via Facebook? How about giving advice to
people in Facebook groups?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

What is It
Reading and listening are activities we do with a clear purpose or reason. For
example, we listen to the local news to find out if malls are already open during the
quarantine. We read stories to be entertained or feel inspired. In this lesson, let us
focus on reading and listening to solve problems.

Listening or reading in order to solve problems is called analytical

listening/reading. Analytical reading and listening require reading carefully and
intently a problem or a given situation and based from the information you have
heard or read, come up with a solution.

What is important when reading or listening for problem solving? When

listening or reading to solve problems, it is important to:

1. know what the problem to be solved is

2. know important details related to the problem you are going to give solutions
to

City of Good Character 3

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
To be able to solve a problem, it is important to know first the problem you
are going to solve! As you listen/read, ask yourself this question: What is the problem
here? Then, listen/read carefully for details that you need to consider in solving the
problem. If you are listening to an actual person telling his/her problem to you, you
can even ask questions to make things clearer.

Listening/reading to give solutions to problems is not new to all of us. We do

it almost all the time. In school, we listen/read to solve different problems and tasks
given by our teachers. At home, we also listen to the problems of our friends and
family members and give advice afterwards. We sometimes listen/read to the news
and think about possible solutions to the problem our nation is facing.

Activity 2.2 Reading Activity

1. Read the short paragraph below about noise pollution.

We all know that pollution is bad. Pollutants or materials like chemicals that bring
pollution is harmful to all living things including us humans. We are all familiar with
water pollution, air pollution, and even soil pollution brought by pollutants that we
humans produce in factories, vehicles and others. However, there is another, less
common kind of pollution that we might be unaware of but is something that can
also have a great impact to our lives. It is caused by a less obvious pollutant—
sound—and is called noise pollution.

Noise pollution is defined by experts as a constant or long exposure to high levels of

sound. Sound is measured in units called decibels, and regularly hearing sound of
more than 85 decibels for long periods of time is already considered noise pollution.
Noise pollution typically come from the outside: vehicle sounds (vehicle engines,
horns), loud music inside factories, construction sites, stores and other business
areas, as well as noises coming from schools, offices and other places where large
groups of people are gathered (ex. concerts) all contribute to noise pollution.
However, noise pollutants do not only come from outside our homes; the loud music
from your own speakers, the television and other appliances inside our very own
houses also contribute to noise pollution.

2. After reading, complete the chart below. You can be creative in

designing the layout of your chart.

Activity 3.2 Reading Activity

1. Read the short paragraph below entitled “Why we waste food”.

Why we waste food

Adapted from the YouTube video of Healthy Options Ph
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU1m6EWMZaY&t=4s)

Food. We all say we love it. Or at least, we say we do. Because the truth
is, Filipinos waste tons of their food daily. Why? First and foremost, food is
wasted because some people can afford wasting food. For them, food is cheap,
and it takes only a small portion of their budget. Because of this, there is no
feeling of regret when they throw food away. Another reason is because we
care too much about how our food looks like. We expect our food to appear in
a certain way, and if they don’t, we tend to throw them away even if they are
still perfectly good to eat. Lastly, we waste food because we have taken food
for granted. We live in a society where food seems to be everywhere. Its in
convenience stores and supermarkets. Some food items are even sampled free
so we feel fine wasting it because there are still so much more available. The
reality is that even though food wastage appears to hurt no one, it actually
does. It is an insult to all the people suffering from hunger worldwide. It hurts
the farmers who spent weeks to grow the plants used as ingredients for the
food we eat. Most importantly, food wastage is damaging our planet.

What I Have Learned

In this lesson, we focused on listening and reading to solve problems.
Remember:

 Listening/reading for problem solving is listening/reading carefully

in order to give solutions to a problem.

 When listening/reading for problem solving, it is important to

identify first the problem that needs to be solved. Then, look for
specific details (ex: Causes of the problem) that you need to consider
solving the problem.

What I Can Do
Apply what you have learned about listening/reading for problem solving to
real-life situations by doing this activity.

1. One of the ways we can employ listening/reading to solve problems is when

we listen to friends and family members as they share their problems to us
and then we give them solutions to help them solve their problems.

Read the letter of the teenager below as she tells about her problems.

A letter from Ms. Confused

Lately, I'm just really not sure about who I am and what I'm good at doing. At
school, I never get the best grades or awards despite studying hard. I always get in
the bottom sports teams after training and playing for multiple years. I don't have any
friends even though I try to put myself out there, put on a smile, and be friendly. I
understand that you can't be good at everything and be the best all the time. I'm just
upset because I don't know what I'm good at or like to do anymore. I feel like everyone
has something they are good at and enjoy doing no matter how small or unimportant
it may be, but I can't find my strengths at all, even after trying various hobbies, sports,
and activities. I feel useless, confused, and lonely. What is your advice?

2. After reading, respond to Ms. Confused by writing her a letter. Give her specific
tips or pieces of advice to help her solve her problem.

Assessment
Showcase the knowledge and skills you have learned in this lesson by
answering the assessment activity.

For 1-3, read the paragraph below. After reading, create a problem-solution chart
(p. 12) about the paragraph.

Internet Use: A Serious Problem?

https://www.ieltsbuddy.com/problem-solution-essays.html

The enormous growth in the use of the internet over the last decade has led
to enormous changes to the way that people consume and share information. Serious
problems have arisen as a result of this. One of the first problems of the internet is
the ease with which children can access potentially dangerous sites. For example,
pornography sites are easily accessible to them because they can register with a site
and claim to be an adult. There is no doubt that this affects their thoughts and
development, which is a negative impact for the children and for society. Another
major problem is the growth of online fraud and hacking. These days, there are
constant news stories about government and company websites that have been
hacked, resulting in sensitive information falling into the hands of criminals.

For 4-5, read the short letter below written by a teenager with a problem. After reading,
write a short letter of advice to help him cope up with his problem.
Message Sender: Phoneless Guy
I've been without a phone for so long now. I'm a teenager living in the 21st
century and being without a phone isn't easy. I've tried time and again to convince
my parents, but after all this time, I've just given up hope and decided to wait until
I finish school and get a job to buy myself the phone I want. But here's the problem.
At school, our teachers have decided to use technology as part of the learning
process, and as cool as that sounds, it inconveniences me a lot. They've made a group
chat on Messenger for sending notes and homework, but I can't receive any of that
because I'm not on that group. I've talked to my parents, but they make it seem like
it isn't their problem and won't even allow me to use their phones. I've spoken to my
teachers, but they tell me I just have to find a way though I have tried, and nothing
works. I'm worried that I'll fall behind in school because of this issue, and no one
seems to want to help me find a solution. What do I do?

Additional Activities
A problem-solution essay is an essay that aims to present a problem and its
possible solutions to readers. It begins with a description of the problem, its causes,
and ends with the writer giving some specific possible solutions to solve the problem.

Practice writing a short problem-solution essay (8-10 sentences) with the

following topics below (just choose ONE). You can also come up with a topic of your
choice.

1. social media problems

2. teenage pregnancy
3. traffic/transportation problems in the city
4. time management problems among students
