Bachelor studies provide a chance for every individual to open their scope of understanding and
acquaint oneself with previously unchartered territories. While pursuing Mechanical
Engineering, something similar happened to me. One day I was watching a documentary titled
“National Geographic Documentary 2015 – Koenigsegg” and seeing someone build a hyper-car
from scratch at the age of 22 without any formal engineering background was no less of a feat
and was something implausible which amazed me. I got motivated by the vision and thought-
process of CEO Christian von Koenigsegg and that day a tiny little spark was lit inside me and now
I wish to fan this flash until it becomes a wildfire. I began following content that had some
information about the production processes involved in automobile manufacturing. While I was
doing this, I realized that the field of study that I have opted for in undergraduate education can
help me a lot in understanding these processes, starting from the designing phase of the vehicle
and right up to its very last stage i.e. testing.
Now Bachelor studies in Mechanical Engineering was making perfect sense to me. The course
allowed me to study modules such as Design of Machine Elements and Engineering Drawing
which formed the foundation for understanding the designing process of machine components.
The desire to create something extraordinary in the field of automobiles was complemented by
modules such as Applied Physics, Basic Engineering Mechanics, IC Engines, Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning, Vehicle Body Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Dynamic Systems Vibration
and Control, Primary Manufacturing, Thermodynamics, all of them played their part in making
me understand the bigger picture of the processes involved in this industry. The practical
application of the theory was undertaken during laboratory courses such as Engineering
Materials, CAD, IC Engines, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Primary Manufacturing, Dynamic
Systems Vibration and Control.
I always strive for academic excellence and therefore always worked towards maintaining good
grades. In school, I was in the top 10% of my class. In my 10th grade, I took part in the State Level
Science Quiz Competition and learned about various fascinating facts related to the Science
subject which were like stimulus to my mind and helped me in widening my perspective. This
made me realize that I had a strong inclination towards this subject.
In line with my objective of being an automobile production engineer, I did my summer
internships at “JCB India Ltd.” and “Opto-Electronics Factory, Dehradun”. During my internship
at JCB India Ltd., I acquainted myself with various assembly processes involved in manufacturing
and I also got the opportunity to work on the overhauling of faulty engines of earthmovers that
were under warranty period. An internship at Opto-Electronics Factory, Dehradun gave me a
chance to get involved in various manufacturing processes such as Milling, CNC Machining, and
Lathe Machining. During that period I learned the significance of Engineering Drawings and
grasped a sound understanding of how these are prepared. I enrolled in AutoCAD Mechanical
and SolidWorks course and learned about using these programs for designing mechanical
components.
To build upon the practical application of theory, I participated in a project named “NASA Human
Exploration Rover Challenge”, the objective of which was to fabricate a human-powered vehicle
capable of traversing difficult and uneven terrains. This project gave me a chance to implement
everything right from designing the vehicle, analyzing the market prototyping, drilling, welding,
to testing that I have learned throughout my Bachelor studies journey. Various workshops were
also undertaken in parallel with the manufacturing of the rover to disseminate Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) across students according to the protocols of
the project.
The course, Masters in Automotive Production Engineering at THI-Ingolstadt, perfectly aligns
with my needs and desires of being an automobile production engineer. The different modules
present in the course such as Internal Combustion Engines, Structural Design of Vehicles will help
me to understand the conceptual phase in automobile production, various processes that go into
the manufacturing of automobile, how to maintain the balance between price, quality, and time
obligations involved in these processes and various other aspects of the automobile industry. If I
am given the prestigious opportunity to join RWTH Aachen, I would like to take optional courses
like Vehicle Acoustics, Quality Management, Mobility Research, and Transportation Modeling as
these are closely related to my interests and will provide me with ancillary knowledge required
to work in the industry. I would like to work on the safety aspects of vehicle and develop a safety
system for automobiles which works on the bionic principles, much like humans who use their
senses to get information about the surrounding, the motive of this research program is to make
the automobiles capable of collecting the information from the environment with the help of
sensors and then use this data for further processing and developing the required safety
technologies. For example, consider that a pedestrian all of a sudden jumps in-front of a car,
then in this scenario headlights of the car installed with appropriate sensors can act as eyes of
human beings. The data captured in this situation can help in automatically engaging the
brakes as well as in unmanned fastening of seat-belts. I would like to develop something like
this while being a part of this institution. It would be an honor for me if I get a chance to research
the above concept while being part of RWTH Aachen. The abundance of test facilities provided
by the university such as Crash Test Facility, Automated Driving Test Facility, Body Structures Test
Facility will aid me in this research project. Since this course covers all the vehicle’s main domains
such as chassis, body, drive-train, safety, driver assistance, and a lot of others, it will equip me
with all the required skills that I need for my career as an Automobile Production Engineer that I
wish to undertake. I seek a challenging environment and a plethora of resources, which as per
my understanding are provided at RWTH Aachen. I would also like to leverage the close
cooperation that the university has with the world’s top automobile manufacturers. I am looking
forward to the bonding Automotive Day, that university organizes for the Institute of Automotive
Engineering Students.
After completing my Master’s degree, I expect to take a couple of years of experience in
Germany and return to my native country. After completing your program I know that I will be
equipped with the tools need to achieve considerable knowledge and make a huge impact in this
field.
I would be grateful to you if I am accorded the opportunity to pursue my Master’s study at your
university and looking forward to joining your esteemed university.
