1.performance Evaluation of Transmission Line

The document discusses evaluating the performance of medium and long transmission lines using MATLAB. It provides the theory behind modeling medium lines using π and T representations, and long lines using a distributed parameter model. It defines key metrics like characteristic impedance, propagation constant, voltage regulation, and efficiency. The experiment involves determining the sending end voltage, power, regulation, and efficiency of a 300km, 50Hz, 3-phase transmission line with given parameters carrying a 50MW load at 220kV using the models. Performance is evaluated using MATLAB.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF MEDIUM AND LONG

TRANSMISSION LINES

Aim: To determine the performance (sending end voltage, power, regulation

and efficiency) of the given transmission line by using
1) Medium line Representation.
A) Π - Model
B) T-Model
2) Long line Representation.

PROBLEM: A three phase, 50 Hz transmission line is 300km long. The

resistance per phase is 0.1333 ohms per km and the inductance per phase
is 1.3 mH per km. The shunt capacitance is 0.01061 µF per km. the
receiving end load is 50 MW with 0.8 power factor lagging at 220 kV.

Software: MATLAB

Theory: The transmission line having its effective length more than 80 km
but less than 250 km, is generally referred to as a medium transmission
line. Due to the line length being considerably high, admittance Y of the
network does play a role in calculating the effective circuit parameters,
unlike in the case of short transmission lines. For this reason, the modelling
of a medium length transmission line is done using lumped shunt
admittance along with the lumped impedance in series to the circuit.
These lumped parameters of a medium length transmission line can
be represented using two different models, namely-
1)Nominal Π representation.
2)Nominal T representation.
Consider the power system shown in Fig. 1. The sending end voltage
and current are then defined in terms of the ABCD parameters as
V S = AV R+BI R (1)
I S =CV R +DI R (2)
From above equations, we can define as
VS V IS
A= | B= S |V =0 C= |
V R I R=0 ; IR R W ; V R I R=0 mho ;

I
D= S |V =0

Fig. 1 Two port representation of a transmission network.

1.1 Nominal- Π Representation

In this representation the lumped series impedance is placed in the

middle while the shunt admittance is divided into two equal parts and
placed at the two ends. The nominal- Π representation is shown in Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 Nominal- Π representation.

If Y = Line admittance in mhos,
Z= Line impedance in ohm,
Then ABCD parameters of the nominal- Π representation are given by
YZ
A=D= ( 2
+1 ) (3)
B=Z Ω (4)
C=Y ( YZ4 +1) mho (5)

1.2 Nominal-T Representation

In this representation the shunt admittance is placed in the middle
and the series impedance is divided into two equal parts and these parts are
placed on either side of the shunt admittance. The nominal-T representation
is shown in Fig. 3. The midpoint voltage as VM.

Fig. 3 Nominal-T representation.

Then the ABCD parameters of the T-network are given by
A=D= ( YZ2 +1) (6)
YZ
B=Z ( + 1) Ω
4 (7)
C=Y mho (8)

2. LONG LINE MODEL

For accurate modeling of the transmission line we must assume that
the parameters are distributed throughout the line. The single-line diagram

of a long transmission line is shown in Fig. 4. The length of the line is l. Let
us consider a small strip Dx that is at a distance x from the receiving end.
The voltage and current at the end of the strip are V and I respectively and
the beginning of the strip are V + DV and I + DI respectively. The voltage drop
across the strip is then DV. Since the length of the strip is Dx, the series
impedance and shunt admittance are zDx and yDx. It is to be noted here
that the total impedance and admittance of the line are
Z =z×l and Y = y×l (9)

Fig. 4. Long transmission line representation.

Let us define the following two quantities
z
Z C=
√ y
Ω which is called the characteristic impedance
(10)
γ=√ yz which is called the propagation constant (11)
Then the relation between Voltages and currents is given by
V S =V R cosh γl+Z C I R sinh γl (12)
sinh γl
I S =V R +I R cosh γl
ZC (13)
The ABCD parameters of the long transmission line can then be written as
A=D=cosh γl ; B=ZC sinh γl W;
sinh γl
C=
ZC mho
3. VOLTAGE REGULATION
Voltage regulation of transmission line is measure of change of
receiving end voltage from no-load to full load condition.

to the sending end power and is given by
