Present Continuous

I. To create sentences in the Present Continuous we need:

BE VERB-ING

am is are

The Present Continuous usually describes an activity that is happening NOW.


Jazmín’s wearing a new pair of glasses.
I’m reading a sentence in English.

II. Affirmative and negative sentences.


I am
He
She is
It (not) going outside.
We
You are
They

III. Questions.

Where it going?

they

IV. Yes/No questions Short answers


Are you having a good time? Yes, we are.
Is my English getting better? Yes, it is.
Are they having a party? No, they aren’t.

V. Spelling of verbs + -ing
1. Most verbs just add -ing.

wear → wearing go → go______ cook → cook______

2. If the infinitive ends in -e, drop the -e.


write → writing smile → __________ live → __________

3. When a one-syllable verb has one vowel and ends in a consonant, double the consonant.
sit → sitting get → __________ run → __________
eat → eating stop → __________

DO NOT double the final consonants x, w and y.


fix → fixing plow → __________ obey → __________

4. If the simple form ends in -ie, change -ie to -y and add -ing.
die → dying lie → __________
