Briefly explain FIVE (5) branches of surveying applied to civil engineering works. (CO1-PO1)(C1) (S marks) Modern surveying equipments have advanced due to the continuing effort and interest in science and technology. However, some surveyors still use conventional equipment such as prismatic compass to collect survey data. List the suitability of prismatic ‘compass to be used as a surveying tool in this modern era. (CO1-PO1)(C2) (5 marks) Table Q1(¢) illustrates the bearing collected by a group of surveyors using prismatic compass on a construction site. Some discrepancies (errors) were found due to local attraction. Analyze the bearing adjustment for each station using local attraction method. State the method used to determine the reduced levels and give FOUR (4) comparisons between these methods (C01-PO1)(C2) (6 marks) b) SIX (6) fuel storage tanks were proposed to be installed underneath the soil layer adjacent to the existing pump station located at the Federal Highway. A survey company was appointed to conduct a leveling survey in order to determine the uneven ground level of the proposed location. The ground level readings were established in a grid of 10 m X 10 m as shown in Figure Q2(b). Examine the volume of soil that needs to be excavated using the Square Method if the formation level is set to 53.0 m from the Mean Sea Level (MSL). Describe the necessary criteria of site requirement in selecting the traverse station. (CO1-PO1)(C2) (5 marks) b) An interchange was planned to be constructed at the northbound PLUS highway in Nibong Tebal, Penang. A surveyor was assigned to set out a simple circular curve using theodolite. In order to have a smooth curvature, the normal chord length was set to 10 m. Perform the calculation and tabulate the setting out curve based on the information given in Figure Q3(b). Propose the standard operating procedures (SOP) of hydrographic survey for bridge constructions. (CO3- P02)(C5) ( marks) b) Remote sensing satelite comes in various models and sizes. They are widely used in military, surveying and recreational purposes through a high-resolution camera. Differentiate between remote sensing satellite and conventional methods for site reconnaissance survey. (CO3-PO2)(C5) (5 marks) ©) Table Q4(c) illustrates the data of tacheometric survey. The multiplying and additive constant are equal to K=100 and C=0 respectively. Compute the reduced level for each station. Then, sketch the perimeter for boundary ABC together with their dimensions. (CO3- P02)(C6) (10 marks) The total station comprises of an electronic theodolite with the aid of laser distance meter. Construct FIVE (5) benefits of total station compare to other equipment in the surveying industry. (CO3-PO2)(C5) (5 marks) The use of modern survey equipment in setting out the pile position is very helpful in terms of time as well as cost.
